Alright you techies, I have a bit of a dilemma...

I'm currently using a 1TB G-Tech USB 3.0 "G-Drive" that I got in spring of 2016 with my 2015 MacBook Pro. Normally, I get write speeds in the high 90's, low 100's, however in the past day or two, I noticed my write speeds have dropped to 50-60 MB/s (pic shown). A few days ago I bought a new cable for it, however after testing both the new and old cables, I have ruled out it being the cable. What do you guys think may be causing the sudden drop in write speeds? It should be noted that I DO have data on it, as well as I also have it set in Photoshop and Illustrator to be used as a scratch disk.

Could that have possibly caused it? And with the new write speeds, would it be better to connect it to my computer via FireWire using a FireWire/Thunderbolt 2 adapter? Or just keep it plugged in via USB?

    Thank you all very much
    Hunter

In addition to ruling out the cable like you did, try it on another computer and see how it performs there.

Have you tried defragging the drive?

Isnt firewire a thing of the past? I dont really have anything to judge it by except for a raid 0 setup.

Yep, it's some legacy stuff. But as far as speeds go it's USB 2.0 -> Firewire 800 -> USB 3.0 right now the 52 MB/s is essentially 2.0 speeds, so FireWire MAY be faster with writing? Idk.

Yep, still have the slow write speed

USB 3.0 is a 6Gbps interface, bottleneck sounds like the drive. OP Is the drive a solid state or a typical spinning Hard drive? you can open disk utility to find out.

Spinning hard drive. And yes I'm aware of the bottleneck, just odd having write speeds suddenly cut in almost in half one day
