    Hey everyone,

Posted this in the tech section and got no answers.

Flushed 5K miles ago, but finally got around to changing the trans filter and pan gasket on my 2nd gen at 60K miles. Having never stripped a pan bolt ever, it happened yesterday on my drain plug. Lesson learned, do not torque these to FSM spec. Other than that, everything else went smoothly, with no leaks to be seen. This truck is my DD, but I don't wanna risk any huge metal shavings floating around in the fluid. I inspected the bolt before puming any new fluid in and the threads look a little marred, and it was just a bit tougher tightening the bolt onto the pan. Will I be safe driving this thing until my new pan arrives?

Sounds like I may have done the same thing as you JCA. I had dropped the pan and done a drain and fill and was torquing the drain plug when I felt it strip. It had gotten pretty tight, but had not reached 15 ft/lbs. I put a little pressure on the wrench to see if I'd really screwed up and it felt pretty tight. I had a trip the next day and drove on it for over 1200 miles. I removed the plug when I got home and the threads were not evenly spaced but i don't think any metal had come off. I had a new plug and when I threaded it on the pan it turned freely (the stripped plug did not).

Unless you want to change your pan, you may want to just try changing the plug. My pan threads were fine, it was only the plug bolt that stripped. I think i torqued to 10-12 ft/lbs and quit tightening. I agree with you; spec seems awful tight.

This is why I never use a torque wrench for drain plugs. So much easier to get a true feel with a ratchet.

Okay, I feel a little relieved now. Either way, I'm taking this as a lesson learned.

Yup, glad I changed the pan. Threads were ready to break off the original pan

Can anyone help me verify the gaskets? #35178-30010 for the overfill and drain, right? Does the fill have a gasket?

I agree when installing my new pan. 12ft lbs seems to work using a new oil drain washer.

I've got a Scanguage set to read my trans temp so I am going to ask the dumb question; Do I still need to do the OBD port jump and shift sequence to get the AT Temp light on? Or can I just wait until I am seeing 130 give or take on the Scanguage?

No you do not. The wire jumping method tells you when the temp. is correct to check. But since you have a scan gauge, it will tell you the correct temp. Thus no need to do the shifting sequence and all of that. once its at the correct temp.with your scan gauge, let it idle, pull the check plug and replug after a small trickle.

I think the lower end of the range is 115 or so, and it took quite a while to get it to that temp. I went back and forth between D and R just sitting in place to try to drive it up a bit. I don't think you'll see 130 unless it is super hot outside or you drive it around.

Thanks for the heads up. This morning on my 3 mile drive to work the Scanguage didn't report a temp over 82. Started at 61 degrees.

My 07’s temp check range is 97°F to 115°F. I put it into temp check mode and then plugged my Ultragauge in the last time I did a drain and fill. Gonna just use the ultragauge to Check the fluid level from now on.
