KC's Outpost has great sandwiches and beer on tap. Place is laid back and welcoming. Last time I was there saw a local dude sitting next to the bar, he had a tall can of budweiser and a double Jack n Coke, smokin a cig and had his clothes hamper beside him folding his tighty whities while warching Nascar on the big screen no fucks giving..

Oh God - I had something like that right before my Christmas break trip to DV with my daughter. Was glad it happened to me at home and not in the wilderness with a five year old. Sorry you had a DV trip interrupted by that!

I just stayed at the motel 6 in Beatty last monday night. It is a pretty nice place as far as accommodations in that small town go. No complaints here. Hope you feel better soon.

I think, back in the day they called it "Surprise Canyon", we would start at Ballaret and head up that canyon to Panamint City, Panamint Springs was about half way up

    Ah, I see the confusion.

Panamint Springs is actually on the west side of the valley on the 190. It is a small hotel, cafe and campground.

Panamint City is in fact in Surprise Canyon. There are a number of springs in Surprise Canyon but none of them are called "Panamint Springs".

The road in Surprise Canyon is closed, it is part of a wilderness area now. You can only hike to Panamint City now.

When I got my first 4wd in the mid-80’s, Surprise Canyon was still open to vehicles, but post-flood it was pretty much 100% winching. I only read about it in Four Wheeler magazine or maybe 4WD and Sport Utility.
