It was hard for me to get the dealer to do it. I ended up making a deal where if it's low they fill as it should be done . If not I pay for the check. So they did the check and it was fine. Then advised me of a TSB to fix my shifting issues. They did it and it's been fine since

Trans fluid turned out to be low. Thanks for all the input and help!

The mechanic was actually honest. He said that during a normal check, they never check trans fluid.

I had the same issue with my 1st 2017, I had the software update and it got better. That one got totaled, my second one was hunting and not shifting well. I ran across shift kit on tw called Shift Sense Pro. Solved all the issues for me. I drive 70 miles a day and when I feel aggressive having the transmission in a lower gear makes it much more fun to drive. I bought mine used on tw for $175 and I got some ditch light brackets included. You can find them here on tw for $130 or buy 1 new for $185. I have been running it for 5 months and about 7500 miles. No issues and it really improves the drivability in the city and in the hills. Can't say enough good things about the SSP.
    Hope this helps.

Not normal! Reflash the computer and check the oil level.

That's because the process to check it is involved, I believe it has to sit and be a certain temperature before they can accurately check.

Went to the dealership today to get my 2018 checked, although I haven't really experienced any problems with shifting or delayed engagement (just somewhat harsh downshifts when slowing down to a stop), but I reported that I did to get it checked under warranty. I was there for about 3 hours and they told me everything was good. I have no idea if they properly checked it, but at least I have it documented that they did, just in case something goes wrong in the future. I might just do it myself when I can for a piece of mind.

Also, I test drove a 4runner TRD off road (premium-package w. kdss) while I was waiting, and I was extremely impressed. Transmission is smoother, more low-end torque, much more comfortable, and the ride was better. Damn I want one now. I may have to trade in my Tacoma for that next year, it is simply a superior vehicle (although the Tacoma looks sharper).
