Thanks for the thread OP! Good informative analysis of the upgrade.
Just pulled the trigger and ordered today!
Don’t have the TRD exhaust yet so will enter my feed back on any felt change.

Hauling a FWCamper full time I’ll be able to confirm any lower rpm improvements
in throttle response. (Witch I need, also have been viewing the orange virus thread
on tuning, where great improvements have been noted on the throttle mapping)

FYI I have MT in my OR running 285 75 16 on TRD Pro rims

    UPDATE:
Installed and have logged almost 100 miles. With my weight with the camper this
upgrade has shown some improvements in throttle response. More noticeable starting at 2700rpm and really coming on up through the tourqe band. Breathing a lot better witch adds hp for sure. But on a slight grade from a dead stop.... getting to this rpm is my issue, throttle mapping for economy is not working for me. Will be looking at tuning options to restore that direct linkage throttle feel. At rolling speed of 25mph and hitting the throttle is when this upgrade really shines!

Woundering anyone’s feeling on the improvements felt when you added a TRD or equivalent CAT back exhaust. (Bolt on hp is always good!!)

Dude, thanks for the write up. I'm going the same route here. Seems kind of silly to pay $350+ for the full assembly to me when seemingly most of the benefits can be had for about $75.

I am seeing improvement in throttle response and gas mileage. After i did this, I did the ECYT always on. That was dramatic. good pickup and equal or better millage.

My next mod is a CAT back exhaust. I'm looking at the Borla S-Type (140680). I found it on Amazon for $572. It sounds good compared to the Magnafolw. Thoughts??

Thanks. Im seeing some improvement with this and the ECT always on mod. I did the DIYS wiring mod by MESOJDM, not the solid state one. I love it

Is the stock system not of sufficient size?
    Is it rusted?
Are the 3rd gen exhaust not mandrel bent?

Nice but no ECT on manual transmissions:(
I was looking at stock TRD exhaust for just a few bucks more $614.5
Omepartworld. I was told by a service tech at Toyota, upgrades with genuine Toyota parts dose not void warranty. (Not sure if they have to install it) .
If I wanted to drop lots of $ I could have them instal twin turbo set up from a Lexus that has our same motor, I didn’t ask how much.... but with warranty....
    ..hmm:boom:

I got my TRD CAI kit for $369 delivered

they have to prove the part did damage before throwing away a warranty.

throw a muffler on the stock tubing, why waste more money on a catback?

BTW, toyota doesnt make trd exhaust

True! I’ve notice most catback set ups do have larger diameter tubing and free flowing muffler. But there will still be a restriction at the end of the Y pipe.
I guess your paying for that TRD stamp of approval and tuning, similar to the TRD Pro with Fox shocks and TRD tuned coil springs

I read through every post just to see if the question was asked, but apparently not.

Has anyone compared differences between running an OEM cotton filter in this intake to running the oiled TRD filter? I have run TRD and K&N in the past, but I have read some research (someone posted a reference to it) indicating that they don't really do much, if anything, for performance on their own, and their filtering capabilities are not as good. I'd like to run this intake with just an OEM filter. It seems to have benefits, either minor or perceived, and it just plain looks cool. Might have to do the oil cap as well for a few more HP.

Anyway, I just don't like the hassle of the oiled filters, I trust the filtering you get from a good OEM filter more, and think the other design elements contribute more to the performance and sound than the TRD filter itself.

I just installed a K&N oiled filter ($60) and the 'air accelerator' horn ($23) from the TRD intake assembly. Also cut out the extra charcoal filter in the upper air box. Not much of a difference... If I roll the window down I can hear a slight whistle if I get aggressive with the throttle. Maybe slightly better throttle response driving around town. I haven't had it on long enough to comment on mpgs. I've ran oiled K&N filters in both my Mustang and Forester in the past and the results were about the same for those. The Forester's mpgs deff improved by a couple ticks. I drove the Mustang too hard for it to matter, most likely. All three vehicles are/were manual transmissions.

For me, the biggest positive of the whole thing is not having to replace the air filters over time so it pays for itself in the long haul. I clean them with the recharge kits every 50k miles or so... easy peasy.

Has anyone installed this on a 2018 TRD Pro? I looked it up on the TRD site and it came up as a valid part for a 2018 taco, but when clicking down into it, it only had installation directions for the 2016 and 2017 models. -Thx

Just did yesterday, works fine. Butt dyno doesn't register any improvement yet but it sure looks cool.

Thanks. I don't know that I will ever be able to quantify it on a dyno, but if get some "perceived" improvement in throttle response and a nice sound I will be happy.

With the exhaust, I can't even tell much of a difference in sound, but I haven't really gotten on the throttle heavy yet.

I ordered all the pieces to this kit, I even ordered a second resonator to make sure it was the correct one. I feel like I missed something but how are you guys getting the stock couplers off the airbox coupler tube and installing the TRD ones? 3d shows you how to install the new ones but not how to take the old ones off, mine seemed to be glued to the airbox tube. Thanks

Are you talking about the rubber couplers that connect the intake tube to the air box on one side and the throttle body on the other? If so, you use new couplers that are part of the kit or that you order separately (they are red). I don’t believe the stock ones come off and even if they did, I don’t think they would work with the TRD intake tube.

Im talking about the piece thats called the "airbox inlet tube" in the Installation instructions, or the part in the bottom picture. As I am writing this I went through everything and now realize that I am actually missing the new trd inlet tube. I guess the dealer decided to not give me that part when I picked everything else up..I knew I should have looked through the box and check the part numbers off myself. I see now that I was indeed missing something ha! Thanks!

No figured out the dealer forgot to give me the part PTR03-35160-AB. Explains why I felt I was missing something..I was. Getting it installed now will be a breeze

I want more sound to complement my cat back but if throttle response increases as well then count me in.
