OK, New Member today. I picked up my 2017 Taco Aug/2017....4k miles and I have the dreaded timing cover oil leaking on the PS pump confirmed today by dealer this morning, they didn't waste any time to schedule a repair time because they had the top end and front cover off when I went in to pick up my rental [a RAV4 :( but thats OK though because its AWD :)]. I was really impressed how fast they got started on the repair. On a second note they still have to schedule my truck for the body shop to repair the body rust that I found 600 miles ago on the front of the bed on both sides between the cab and bed were the black rubber seal is attached to the front end of the bed, it was easy for me to see because my truck is white. Don't get me wrong...I like my Gen3 styling, front grill, and design lines. I'm just putting this out there to let everyone know that they better push back from reading this thread grab your flashlights and check your PS pumps for oil and look real good between bed and cab for rust under that bed seal... and get it in while your truck is still under warranty.

Hey man. When they repaired mine, it was a very complicated process that involved disassembling nearly the entire front end of the truck. The lead mechanic said that if he has to do it again, he’d take the engine out because it would be easier. It was a 3-day job. As in 3 FULL days.

Too many trucks and mods to list.. check builds
its not an easy undertaking especially if you have 4x4... depending on the tech they may or may not remove the engine.. if it stays in the front diff and steering rack have to come out.

Does this affect the 2.7 and the 3.5?

Kremtok is right, when I saw my truck it had been there 9hrs, they had the truck up in the air (tires)about 8" off the ground, the front two tires off the truck, and the front end almost down on the ground. The front grill was off and every thing from the radiator to the motor (3.5 V6) removed... the top end of the motor including intake was removed along with the air-box and timing chain cover removed. I think that was quit a feat in its self since I brought the truck in just to check for a oil leak that had resulted in a drop of oil of on my new driveway. So what time they actually started the repair I don't know.

I had a good talk today with a toyota certified mechanic. He told me about all of the problems the new v6 engines are having, this oil leak being the first he mentioned.
Let's just say I will not be buying a newer tacoma unless they go back to the 4.0 v6.
To have a toyota mechanic tell me they're junk was all I needed to hear.

Do you think you could build a better new truck or car on your own?

That's why they sold 20K of them last month... because they are junk.
No, you needed to hear it so it would justify your emotional need to feel you still have the superior generation lol. So easy. Newsflash: These trucks are just fine. They run just fine. They haul just fine. They are dependable and reliable. Just. Fine.
Last thing they would do is put antiquated tech like the 4.0 in a new truck.

Not trying to feel superior, just relaying what a mechanic told me that wrenches on these trucks every day. His opinion, not mine. I've never even sat in a 3rd Gen taco yet.
But after hearing that, I personally would want to investigate these new engines more before slapping down my cash.
We all have dealt with enough issues with recalls, repairs etc to know that $hit happens with all of them. Same goes for just about every vehicle on the road.
I just like getting opinions from mechanics when ever possible. That's the only reason I commented here.
Not trying to piss off any 3rd Gen owners.

Mechanics can be bias. Maybe he owned the 4.0 and resents the new engine, maybe his uncle played bad touch in the back of a newer 3.5 Tacoma with him, who knows? One Tech vs TW, I'd pick your battles wisely :p

I'm a mechanic that gets paid more than anyone on the Toyota shop floor. I think our engines are great. Now you can claim you heard that.

I'm a Toyota mechanic... there is a few growing pains in the new engine.. but about 90% of the trucks that we sell never come in with engine issues... and honestly. only a few came in with the "common" transmission issues.. this new 3.5 will end up being another great engine because its based off of an already great engine..

Ok, Sorry about getting back so late about my truck oil leak repair, got distracted with a few things needing more of my attention, one of them was paying my 2017 taxes :) . It took the dealer from drop off Thursday April 5th to Wednesday 11th pickup. I stopped off at the dealer Friday April 6th to have them clear a warning light on the dash of my rental, while there I looked in on my truck. They had raised the cab up off the frame pulled the motor and front drive assembly out, with the motor on a stand dismantled. WTH and HS, I went into the Service Managers Office and asked why they had gone to such an extreme for the repair, he said that because the motors are set so far back from the front end of the truck and how tight they are on the sides that it is the only way to easily do the repair and that it looks more involved then it is, Ok I guess/hope they know what there doing. When I picked up the truck Wednesday the Service associate said they had to put in $5.00 of gas in before they took it out to test drive it and that I will have to put gas in because it was empty, thats funny because I thought I had 3/4 of gas in it when I brought it in. So I stop for gas on the way home and I can't put any more than $6.00 of gas in the tank, all the way home the gas level warning message is lit up. Ok there is something wrong here, when I get home I crawl under the truck to look around. I find that the wiring harness on the left side frame had been crushed and I can see some bare copper wires inside the harness loom. I call the service department and talk to my service associate and tell him what I found, he says to bring it back tomorrow morning and they would check it out. I get a call from the dealer at work and I'm told that the mechanic must have pinched the wiring while putting everything back together, the mechanic had patched the broken wires for now and they ordered a new wiring harness. The parts come in... the truck goes back... parts are put in... and I pick up my truck. My service guy apologizes for what happened and that the mechanic was sorry for what happened.... blah blah blah. On the ride home I hear a rattling in the back of the truck. I get home crawl under to look around and I find the right rear cab body mount bolt loose as can be rattling around, and I noticed that the cab and the bed are not lined up to each other. I call in the morning and tell my service guy what I found and that I didn't want to drop my truck off again, and that I will be coming in on my lunch and I will expect them to drop everything for me and to torque the bolt down asap and that I'm not even worried about lining the cab/bed up because I can now longer trust them to complete any repair right. The service associate told me that he does not want me to waste my lunchtime to fix the problems and that he would pick the truck up from were I worked, fix the issues and bring it back to me. The bolt was torqued down and all the other body bolts were doubled checked and re-torque', the cab/bed was even realigned. What a first time experience with a dealer's ability to fix their own product with factory trained mechanics, if it wasn't for the truck being under warranty I will have to fix it myself.
