I just want to be done.
Currently sitting on 285s and have 4.88s in the garage... who has already done this? How is the DD on 33s? Should I just run 35s at this point or does it maintain drive ability with 33s?

Thats waaaaay overgeared if you ever plan on going 70mph your truck is going to be hating life... 4.10s with 33s puts you back close to stock ratio, thats what Im running and its great... even with 35s 4.88 is overgeared for a DD on the highway. I would go with 4.56 if I wanted to drive on the highway with 35s. If its a trail rig 4.88 and 35s would be good.

    Why did you buy 4.88?

I don't think it's overgeared. I'm currently on 33's with 4.88's and it drives like it's supposed to. Actually, I feel that 35's would not be as snappy as it is right now.

I would regularly drive 500+ highway miles between Portland and Seattle and I can tell you that my RPM's weren't screaming as you would think.

Edit: My truck is A/T and since OEM is 3.91 then the 4.88's are perfect.

4.88s are good with 33s, you'd be back to being undergeared with 35s. Our '17 turns 2,300 RPM at 79-80 mph with 4.88s and 285/75R16s. It also holds gears better on the highway vs stock (auto trans). Fuel economy is around 18 mpg when driving ~65 mph, we averaged 16 mpg for a 700 mile round trip this past weekemd, fighting wind the entire time.

3rd gens have 2 overdrives, a 2nd gen only has 1 overdrive so it will be revving higher....

I think 4.3s are perfect for 2nd gen but can't get them so 4.1s or 4.56 or 4.88 for 2nd gens.

I've been thinking about a 3rd gen with 4.88s and 33s, you can have the big tires low gears and still be at a good rpm on the road...

She's no hotrod, but it feels a lot better than it did, even on stock tires. Of course, the truck begs to be driven aggressively, which I'm not used to. Overall, I'm very happy with the gear/tire combo.

Looking into getting gears for my new 17 with general grabber 35's with 18' rims. are the 4.56 best/closest to stock for DD and mild offload?

I'm a first gen so this doesn't apply as well as some folks comments.....

4.88s and 33s are awesome. Feels better than stock. And heaps better than 33s on 4.10s. That's one gutless truck that lugs constantly (5spd manual)

I do 65-70 on hwys. Drives fine. It puts the engine in around 2800-3100k perfect power band .not sure on the 3.5 on you 3rd gens.
