This is my first time to the site. I was hoping someone could help me out. My 2015 Tacoma Prerunner is a 4x2. Can I put a locker in the rear end or do they already have one in it. Want to check it out before I spend any money. Thank you

If your prerunner is an Off Road model, it has a locker. If not, your best option is an ARB air locker. East Coast Gear Supply is the company to go through. Get an assembled 3rd member with locker sent to you and ship your old one back to them.

You can't just add a stock e locker to your non e locker housing. You can do the Harrop e locker, but I don't know much about it. I have a compressor for airing down/ up, so the air locker makes sense to me. The stock non e locker rear end is significantly stronger than the stock e locker rear end.

I did a bunch of research on this and what I came up with is the 8.4" is slightly stronger, not significantly, than the 8". Do you have some reading info for me that states otherwise? Thanks!

Nothing specific. I know the guys on 35-37" tires who work their trucks hard have a tendency to blow e locker rears. I've read that the 8.4" (both actually use 8" ring gears) is supposedly nearly as strong as the Ford 9" - supposedly.

Coming from a rock crawling background, I find it hard to believe the 8.4 is anywhere near as strong as the 9. I've had D44, Chrysler 8.25, GM 12, D35, Toy 9.5, GM 14, Toy 8. The Ford 9 beats all those except the GM 14 and maaaaaaaybe the Toy 9.5. Ford 9's are pretty damn tough. The D35 is trash. I'll do some more reading. Thanks!

I'd love to hear what you find. I'm just regurgitating shite I've read. I'm on 33s, not locked, and not a rock crawler. I like seeing where my truck will go in deep spring snow, but that's about it. My truck is set up for getting to hunting areas and working in the woods.

Ya, I am just setting up my Tacoma for dirt roads when I take my dirt bike out. Just think a locker would be a bit of insurance. I think I am going arb locker from what I have heard. I like the thought of airing up or down my tires out on the trail. I will keep you posted on what I find out

I dropped one of those in a 2000 Durango and hammered the h*ll out of it for well over a decade in the sand dunes with no issues. Don't know if I'd use one for slippery snowy or icy roads though.

And no, the Durango wasn't stock.

I think there's a Youtube video that explains 2WD with locker doesn't perform much better than 2WD with no locker. I would save the $$$ on the locker (between the compressor and locker you're looking over a thousand bucks) and put it to better use. You have a 2WD truck, just drive it accordingly (as in fast enough to not get stuck).

Ya, I think those are wise words. I have a dodge 2500 4x4 and I think I will use that truck for four wheeling and the Tacoma for taking the motocross bike to the track. Thank you for saving me a bunch of cash. I can’t be wasting money like that.

Yup. For $1k you could get some OME Dakar leafs and extended shocks in the rear, which would give you better droop, flex and performance in the rear, which would probably give you more traction for your money anyways. Then add some Bilstein's or stock 2016+ Tacoma struts and springs in the front and you got a lifted setup for about the same price.

My next thing is to do that. What do you think of the fox 2.0 gas shock or king? I have the bilsteins on my dodge and love them, I want to do my Tacoma right. And truely want it to look sick and perform well

That's for sand wheeling, and I agree...locked or unlocked a 2wd is going to get stuck in deep sand unless they can maintain tons of momentum and never stop. Even 4x4s get stuck in sand easily.

However, on rutted out, rocky trails a locked 2wd will outperform an open diff 2wd ten-fold. I had a Prerunner previously that I put a lunchbox locker in and it was a night/day difference...I could actually keep up with my 4x4 friends on their easier trails that I would get stuck on before.

Of course, that just made me want a 4x4 even more so I eventually upgraded to that lol

I have Bilstein's in the rear (5160's) and Kings in the front. I plan on getting Kings someday for the rear, but I think Fox or King would be great.

I also recommend Wheeler's Super Bumps. Really help when you bottom out. About $120.
