Has anyone ever camped here before? It's an island just south of Ocracoke Island. Looking to do some primitive beach camping this weekend.

Check the “beach camping in Maryland and Virginia” thread here for a link to a trip report I posted. More info at www.portsmouthislandfishing.com and their Facebook page by the same name.

You’ll need reservations on the ferry. Call 252.225.4261

It will likely be cold and windy. Make sure you have plenty of line and extra long tent stakes unless you’re staying in the cabins.

Let me know if you have specific questions.

I’ve been to both Portsmouth Island and Cape Lookout. In my opinion Cape Lookout is better. There is more things to see and do. Portsmouth island is still good but all there is to do is get there, set up camp, and fish. To each their own. Just my two cents.

Here are a few pics of us starting at Portsmouth Island to Hatteras Island in April 2018D3467D27-94F1-403B-9C10-0210C727BE21.jpg 737CD1CB-74D9-4480-9018-2AC3EDB38958.jpg 84CDCF8D-A7F6-49DB-B02B-917FE24E0849.jpgB500F495-296E-48A3-95A0-35AD16981D42.jpg F663CFC3-7936-41E9-BA0B-E20A16D4F2CD.jpgCFAAF3C9-88EA-4433-9778-193011E67E23.jpg

I know nothing about surf fishing but there were definitely a lot of people there getting it done.

Nice photos and nice rig - thanks for posting. Would you mind sharing where on Portsmouth you were camped in the sixth shot? Looks like an awesome spot especially in April when the skeeters and green heads aren't yet out in force.

I'd agree South Core has more going on with the lighthouse, museum and day trippers. Portsmouth has a more remote feeling which we prefer and, even though we've been to the Village on the north end several times, its still a treat to walk through and imagine living there in its heyday. Either will provide the best beach camping on the east coast.

The sixth shot is actually on Hatteras Island. I forgot the name of the campground but it’s on the sound side. Sorry for the mid-leading. Those pictures are from our entire trip. We started at Portsmouth Island and traveled as much of the OBX as possible.

No problem and thanks for the clarification. I was wondering if I'd somehow missed a potential sound side camping spot on PI. I'm planning to take our grand daughter there next Spring and the beach can sometimes be a bit windy even for a well staked tent. On Hatteras, that campground would likely be Frisco Woods.

Sure hope Dorian moves further out to sea. We have a Portsmouth trip scheduled later this Fall and the storm could really screw that up.

I do like portsmouth island for the abandoned ghost town and the submerged road to water cross

When we went there April of 2018 we went to the village. I measured where the water hit on the truck and in the level spots it was about 38” and in the areas that it dips down the water level hit the bottom of our windshield then splashed up the rest. Probably the loneliest feeling I’ve had in the driver seat of that truck. I thought I was done. Lol needless to say after I crossed back again the wife got on board for a snorkel.
