When communting, you can end up putting in a lot of miles and it's better to be clipped in. It also helps keep you from having to switch pedals (if you only have one bike like I do).

I sure wouldn't recommend wearing these when off-road! lol

I switched to large platform flats - with my 5Tens - on my road bike and it may be less efficient but MUCH more comfortable for my feet. Last fall I did a 90 mile day that way. Though I did about 1/4 mile of dirt road the other day and had about 4 pedal strikes!

I noticed on the new bike that all 8 rear gears work fine and only 1st works correctly up front. To get into 2nd up front I need to shift to 3rd and then back down to 2nd and then its fine, 3rd will happen someimes if I push hard on the shifter and hold it for a long time. I assume the front derailleur is not adjusted properly, any tips on setting it up? Thanks.

It is a Diamondback Atroz Mountain Bike, 3 gears up front 8 in the rear, so a 24 speed.

It’s probably best to look up some instructions on YouTube, but adjusting a derailleur comes down to two things: cable tension, and limit screws. The shifter uses the cable to pull the cage up to a larger sprocket. Not enough tension, and you’ll just be taking up slack before the cage moves. If the tension is in the ballpark, it can be tightened up with the barrel adjuster at the shifter. Otherwise, loosen the barrel adjuster (screwed in) all the way, and take up the slack at the derailleur end by loosening the clamping screw, pulling on the cable, and tighten the screw. However, too much cable tension prevents the spring from pulling the derailleur back to the smaller cogs when you shift in that direction. So enough tension to shift to a bigger gear, but no more. Also, on an older bike, dirt/corrosion in the cable housing can prevent the cable from “relaxing” and shifting to the smaller sprockets. But you say your bike is new.

The other adjustment is the limit screws. There’s one for each extreme of the derailleur travel ... these are screws on the derailleur that can be adjusted to stop the cage in either the inner or outer location. You want just enough clearance so the cage doesn’t rub the chain, no more. There’s no stop for the middle location ... that’s set by the indexing on your shifter, plus how far the tension moves the derailleur cage on the first shift. Since you say you have to push hard to get to 3rd (I assume this means the large ring) there could be insufficient tension or your high limit screw is stopping the cage before it’s moved far enough out to move the chain.

Hope this helps ... triples aren’t always easy but once you understand the principles it makes more sense.

Finally got my rack setup almost finished. Test fitted my bikes and got the upright tested at hoghway speeds. Happy to say not much flexing or swaying with high crosswinds. Pretty happy with this setup.

Just some pics of my set up. Real simple tailgate pad which I think goes well with the inferno!
