Got my HID retrofits from @LSC15 installed just in time to move to Philadelphia. It’s been a crazy move, but I did get to see how good the lights look on the drive up from the moving truck (my brother was driving mine).

 

My truck passed PA inspection! AAA wanted to fail me because of the wheel spacers, but I found a shop close to my house in Philly that was super helpful and had some of the best customer service I have experienced.

 

I haven't posted in a while since I recently moved to Philadelphia and started a new job. But here's some pics of my truck after the snow moving one of my sculpture to my office. I made a roof rack out of unistrut.

 

Found a big parking spot near my house. It's hard trying to park this thing in the city. I can't image trying to find a space for a full size.

Philadelphia has started to kill my 2 year old Toyota battery. I guess I will see if they will actually pro rate it.

 

Had to get a new Toyota battery last week since mine failed to start after only 2.5 years. I had to pay half the cost of a new one. When my new one fails I'm not getting another Toyota battery.

Also, Tiffany survived the "bomb cyclone" and I don't even need to clean snow off thanks to the wind!

 

I just wanted to post that I was never able to get my transmission fluid line adapter thing to not leak. I ended up drilling and tapping a hole in the stock elbow. This was my original plan, but it changed since I received the wrong part when I ordered a replacement stock piece. I drilled into the flat part right at the turn on the elbow and there was just flat surface for the sensor fitting to seat.

The part number to replace the stock elbow is 90407-16012.

 

No real updates, but I have been working on a 3d model of my truck. I got the original STL from someone on TTORA, but it is a very low poly model. I recently made it an extended cab. I have it converted to poly surfaces in Rhino and I hope to eventually smooth it out, but that will take some time. I pulled some FJ wheels from the sketchup warehouse too.

 

Did some more work on the 3D model. I'm slowing going through and rebuilding all of the surfaces...

So I've been researching power folding mirrors and I am going to document as much as I can in this post.

The 1st gen Tacoma and 3rd gen 4runner were never offered with power folding mirrors.
The Japanese counterpart for the 4runner (HiLux Surf) was offered with this option. They even use the same wiring connector as the 99-02 4runner that has heated mirrors.

The part numbers for the Hilux Surf mirrors are:

D0=Red, 3k4
F1=Champagne, 587

J1=DK Blue, 8L7
I included the color codes because the part number without them doesn't always show up in google searches.

The part number for the switch is:

Coinball on t4r was able to acquire and retrofit a set of these onto his 3rd gen 4runner. The first issue was that the mirrors are obviously fitted for a Right Hand Drive vehicle, so the angles were off. The mirror outers were not able to interface with his stock mirror bases on his 2002 limited 4runner. However, he was able to bolt them right up to bases from a 96-98 4runner. In case you didn't know, the 4runner mirrors changed very slightly in 99, and apparently there was a change in the base of the mirror. Once bolted to the base of a 96-98 4runner, the angle is corrected and there is no longer a vision issue.

Now comes the issue of acquiring these mirrors. Since these were only offered in the Japanese market, they are very difficult and expensive to get in the US. They do occasionally pop up on eBay, but they are usually still pretty expensive. You also have to verify that they are in fact the power folding version since they only seem to come on certain SSR-X and SSR-G Hilux Surfs. These mirrors need to have at least 5 wires in the pigtail to be the power folding version.


The fact that the mirror cases can bolt directly onto the USDM 96-98 4runner bases got me thinking. I know that Toyota likes to recycle parts, but never really makes this that obvious. What if Toyota used these same mirror cases on a USDM vehicle? You can't cross reference the part number since the mirror case and base is considered one unit. The UZJ100 Land Cruiser (98-2007) comes with power folding mirrors as an option. They also look VERY similar to the 3rd gen 4runner mirror. Obviously the bases are not the same, but what if the case could bolt to a 4runner or tacoma base?

By power folding do u mean that the mirror folding is powered or the mirror adjusting? My 03 DC has power adjusting of the mirror but you have to manually fold it.

 

Yes, you push a button on the mirror switch and it folds the whole mirror in. This is useful on narrow streets or when parking.

Years back I swapped out my turn signal sockets for 1157s (stock is 1156). This adds an extra wire so that I could run switch back bulbs and make the turn signals look like fog lights.

I just replaced the original sockets that I had with 1157 ones (https://amzn.to/30weyw3) since my old ones were not sealed. This was causing a lot of issues with the turn signal indicators and other random flasher issues.

Here is a pic of how I trimmed the turn signal housing to fit the 1157 socket. Basically just have to make the notches a little wider.

 

Added new windshield washer nozzles from a honda odyssey. Now I have an even fan pattern as opposed to the laser jets of water that the stock nozzles emit.

So you are settled in out in Philly? You need to come ride along on the Keystone Cruisers run next month.

 

What software are you using? I can send you the one I have if you want. I have the original .stl before I started messing with it as well.

Yep all settled in Philly. Don't know if I can make it to any events next month, I've got a lot going on at work building a new Digital Fabrication lab.
