Mine need 173# and I just set it to 173 and tightened then did one more "click" of the torque wrench. They haven't fallen off yet, but maybe someone more experience then me can chime in. My new bearings only have a couple thousand miles on them and it was my first time.

    Anyone?

I picked up my hubs with bearings pressed from the Machine shop last night and witness the mechanic torque the bearing nut to 200 footpounds.
The mechanic said he had done some of these bearing before and it's just a one time strait forward torque to 200lb , no backing up on it. The socket worked like a charm and held up pretty good. It's all down hill from here I just need to put Humpty Dumpty back together again...LOL :D Hope this helps out the next guy with a Tacoma prerunner 2 wheel drive with front bearing problems. If anybody has any questions let me know I'll be glad to post here so that other's can use the info.....

I am a Prerunner owner and have a related question good sir!....a few days ago i took my brand new bearing assembly to a pep boys shop in order to be pressed...long story short, when they gave the pressed hub and bearings they did NOT return what i now know is an adjustment nut. So now im stuck with the pressed hub and bearing assembly but my my truck is still up on jacks because i cant install the part. Is this adjustment nut lost after the old bearings are pressed out? Is it possible they just forgot to return it to me? or might they have damaged it and kept it hush knowing i wouldnt know any better? Can this part be bought at any autoparts store? What does this nut do, is its only purpose to hold the bearing assembly in place? ANY help from ANYONE would be appreciated, I thank you in advance

I am pretty sure adjustement nut is Toyota dealer item only because (almost never needs replacing) that means PBoys had lost the nut or damaged.I would go back there and ask what happened. Otherwise you need to buy new one, but that puts their work on bearing in question. I dont know if I would have trust in a bearing, done by somebody like those guys.

They maybe good guys but on that day appears their had was not in right place. problem with that I would question quality of bearing work and thats something you want to do it right. I would get the nut but really check the bearings. before installing them. Did you pack them with fresh grease before pressing them in ?

That nut is a one time use and get's damaged when they take it off. It is a dealer item and u can order it online cheaper. I can get u that part number if u like in the next day or two, just let me know. fyi-after u torque it to the specific footpounds u have to bend the edge of the nut with a cold chisel that's why it's a one time use part. Plus it's torqued to like 200 footpounds so not worth taking your life at risk for an 8-10 dollar item.
To answer your other question, the nut is what holds the bearing assembly to the wheel hub.

I'm back....Ive been out for the last couple of days and i spent some of that time getting my truck off the jacks, mission accomplished!...I needed it back asap! (Was driving a 1997 GMC Safari as a lender, Yikes.) Unfortunately didnt pack the new bearings with grease, the shop that pressed the bearing assembly back on my hub told me the bearing assembly already came packed with the all the grease it needs :/
I hope this doesnt come back to bite me in the behind. So in your estimation, in what will this result? Shorter bearing life?..

Awesome, Thanks for the intel. Unfortunately, i wasnt around the computer to read your reply...I ended up dishing out $25 for the adjustment nut at the local Toyota dealership...I DID have the master tech torque the nut onto the hub so it made me feel less robbed in paying dealer price. I also needed the work finished sooner than later but it would be good to know your sources for future reference...where is youre preffered location for your truck parts? By the way i did notice the notch you were talking about and i made sure they knew to place the bend on it. Thanks for posting the pic, made it easier to explain what i was talking about :)

Glad to hear you got your truck back on the road. I got all my parts on the internet at Toyotapartszone.com I think that the bearings come from the vendor with minimum grease so putting/repacking with better grease is something u want to do before taking it to the machine shop to have them pressed in. good luck man and let me know if u have more questions.

There is a special socket to remove the lock ring.

Are you asking or telling us? The adjustment nut or locking ring is a one time use part and so it can either be removed with the tool I used in this thread or it can be cut off. The issue is putting the bearings back on with a press then torqueing this adjustment nut to 200 foot-pounds.

Dude, Thanks for the input. It's the same tool I posted here in this thread back in 2012 when I started this post. Might want to read the whole thread from the beginning before you post comments.
