If you don't want to risk any damage. I wouldn't go any closer than 50 yds. At a 100yds you'd only scratch the paint.

I'd worry more about richots and splashback when shooting 5.56 on steel at 100 meters and less. Also, no green tips or steel core ammo.

Mocked up, once I find my AR tool I can torque the barrel and then assemble it for real.

Starting to gather parts to build a AR15 .223 wylde. Ordered a 18” BA Hanson barrel 25% off and upper parts. I will put it on a AP M4E1 upper/lower with their 15” Atlus Mlock hand guard. Not sure what FCG I’m going to put put in yet, but I plan to put a Leopold VXR 3-9 or Mark AR 1 scope.

Here is a mock up with a some spare parts of my newest build. 16" barrel, 15.5" SLR handguard.

I think I ended up with a modern day Kentucky Long Rifle? [IMG]

6.5? Nice, I'm finishing up my own M4gery in 6.5 myself.

I'm just getting back into the AR scene after a few years away. Is PSA the best place to buy a complete mid-length upper and lower 5.56? I don't need anything super fancy. My last setup was a Plum Crazy polymer lower and no-name free float upper. It worked well for my uses. Any recommendations other than PSA? I'm looking to be all in under $600 with a free float upper rail (Optics will be added later).

No 6.5 for me yet. These are both 556 guns. I have an LR308 I’m still in the middle of, mk12 on hold because just the rail, and an R700 in 308 which I may sell and get a Bergara in .308 or 6.5

If you look 2 posts above, the rifle on the right is a PSA middy upper I got on sale for 249.99 and so far it runs like a champ with a toolcraft BCG. I did swap out the A4 handguard for Magpul MOE SL though. Much nicer IMO. I would spend a little more on a lower though, you can get aero precision for a decent price and if they have blend they’re even cheaper. BCM as well.

PSA is certainly the affordable route to a complete kit. Sometimes they put kits on sale for $350.

Also just ordered 3x 25rd boxes of Fiocchi 125gr SST 300AAC for testing, seems to be really good from every review I've seen.

I took my Saint Edge down to the small area I have to shoot on our property to zero the hard sights and the Red Dot. I'm really impressed with the quality of the build, the light weight and the ultra-smooth trigger. I also took my Auto Ordnance Thompson M1A1 just for comparison. Both are excellent to shoot.

Becoming obsessed with the Colt 733 used in the movie "Heat." I may have to build one, but with a "brace" instead of a stock. Anyone know the barrel length? 10.5" maybe?

    If it’s a carbine has system I’d say 11.5”
From the FSB to the rear of the muzzle device looks about the same on my 11.5 SBR
