Pablo - the guy who made the video - said that this dude was in hero mode the whole time he was on the same trail, constantly mashing the throttle. Broke his chinesium U bolts on one side and refused to listen to multiple peoples advice to just ratchet strap it back together before moving it. Once Pablo knew they guy wouldn’t listen, he just got out of the way and started recording.

You can tell it was still in 4wd and in gear which made it much worse, add to that the E brake cable rolling up with the axle and the fact that the FJ driver was using a winch cable as a tow strap and you have this beautiful train wreck.

Problem the guy has is his wife is pregnant with twins and none of that damage is covered by most, if not all insurance companies.

So color me ignorant (and someone who has never used a winch), but what's the problem with the winch as a tow strap? You're the 2nd person who has mentioned this.

Did you see that the driver posted in the "Loose end thread" (that is now locked)? He "claims" that HE was telling everyone else that he should strap down his leaf springs to his axle and that EVERYONE ELSE was telling him it wasn't needed and they can get him out. He said his only bad move was listening to everyone else. RIIIIIIIIGHT. Thread was locked shortly after someone called BS and colorful language was being used more...

I'm not sure how he'll claim that, but he also "claimed" that his insurance is going to cover all but $2k of it.

A few of the big posters said that he had no blocks (orlder pics and posts by him only listed a medium stage Icon kit in older posts...nothing about blocks). It was just a ubolt that was probably loose and gave way at that point in the trail...at which point everyone was trying to help him and he wouldn't listen.

Using a wound winch line as a tow strap will screw up your winch line, drum, and most likely it’s internal brake as well. Always advised to use a winch as a winch and a strap as a strap.

There are two more videos that haven’t gone viral yet and they detail how poorly due to his attitude the interactions with the ones genuinely trying to help him went. He blames in all directions but never himself, when you let someone hook onto your vehicle that choice is yours to agree to or refuse. He allowed it so he had to own it even though he was encouraged not to. He got called out by another member of the volunteer SoCal recovery group and that’s when he requested the thread be locked. More details will come to light soon enough.

Missed it sadly as last night was my sons first scout meeting. Word is this guy is going to be at the VFW every Monday for quite awhile. Think I’m just going to have to try to get their first and order a whole or half pan to drop off at home before the scout meetings start.

Yeah, don’t know when they are going to be released but when they do it will likely be for a good reason. MYbe if there is a James V2.

Just witnessed a dude totally melting down on Facebook today. The whole deal, name calling, the works all because someone doesn’t “Overland” the way he said they are supposed to. WTF, over.

I tried to go back for them but the tread is gone. It was glorious. Dude get a defender 110 and appoints himself master of the formula spouting of quotes verbatim from a book on planning international vehicle born trips. His travel history? Went to the Grand Canyon...

It’s weird, I met a guy from that group at their last event in Arkansas, camped right next to me in his Jeep with 40’s rolling on Dana 30 axles with all the farkle that you can bolt onto a Jeep. Spent the whole weekend making snide comments about other people’s vehicles and the vendors displays right to their faces, thankfully he was polite enough to refrain from telling me the errors in my mechanical choices. Explained to me even after my less than polite protests how freakin’ awesome his Jeep was and how he’s rich and a super amazing guy.

All in all we still had a good time and met some really cool people, spent some time in a beautiful part of Arkansas, and came home safe. But for some reason the kooks in the Natural State group seem to be more vocal than those in other groups.
