Installing 2012 JBL/Entune/Nav into 2012 O/R non-jbl

where did you get the METRA harness kit, i got a 2012 non JBL system that I need to replace by a 2012 JBL with Navigation. all i got is the JBL radio with the JBL amp. GPS antena, do i need to convert to JBL speakers too?

So I wanted to add some information for those looking to tackle this like the OP did. While he provided a bunch of information I still had many questions after reading his post. I was able to dig through the web and find what I needed. I then took my time last week and re-created the same harness that the OP made for my Father in-law.

He has a 2013 Tacoma with the regular non-nav, non-jbl, touch radio. I did not add the subwoofer or the tweeters so my harness only has wires for the front & back speakers that were already in his truck.

Amp: You will need a JBL amplifier but it does not have to be from a Tacoma. I was able to get one from a 06-09 Prius for half the price people wanted for the Tacoma ones on eBay. When you look at them, other than the mounting brackets (which I didn't need anyhow), the amplifier is the same. Just make sure to get one with the three pigtail connectors, that's one thing the OP left out. I'm not aware of an aftermarket harness that plugs into the JBL Amp so you are kind of screwed without them.

Here are the things from the OP's post that I did NOT need for his 2013, other years may differ

Shielding: The OP also mentioned shielding some connections on the harness but didn't dive into detail. In the attached documents I list which pins connect to the shield and which wires need to be shielded. In short the 4 speaker signal wires from the Radio to the Amp have their own shield, and the 2 bluetooth signal wires from the Radio to the Amp have their own shield. I followed the OP's advice of wrapping the two sets of wires in Aluminum Tape which I bought a roll of at home depot for $5 or so. I then taped down the bare ground wire to the outside of the Aluminum tape in a few spots to make a connection. This bare wire connects to specific pins on the connectors which are listed in the attached wire diagrams. I wrapped that in a layer of Teflon Pipe Tape, I'd recommend the yellow tape for "oil" seals as it's thicker. I then wrapped the pipe tape in electrical tape to complete the shielding.

Radio: On his 2013 Tacoma the Main, FM Antenna, & USB connections were the exact same between the two radios. He didn't care about SiriusXM but the blue connector is there on the JBL Nav radio if you wish to purchase a Sat Radio antenna. The wires going "To Speakers" on the old radio now connect to

Metra 70-1761. The "To JBL Amp" connector on the new JBL Nav radio will use Metra 71-8113. The GPS port is for the Nav antenna. Make sure the Nav radio you buy has that harness shown in the pic connecting the radio to the Nav unit underneath the radio. The other connections to the left of the Main harness on both radios, and to the right of the USB on the old radio were not used.

Power: So the OP shows a white wire with no end on it that he uses to power the Amp. He does not mention where he tapped into power. The AMP requires it's own power circuit which they call "Radio 2" in the wire diagrams. In my Father-In Law's 2013 Tacoma the under-hood fuse box already had "Radio 2" listed with a 30amp fuse in place. My worry was that I now had to run a wire through the firewall to the box. Digging online though I found that this was actually already done in his 2013 from the factory despite him not having JBL. Perhaps it was cheaper for Toyota to use one harness. If you remove the passenger kick panel you will see a connector with 6 wires. The White/Blue stripe wire runs to the Radio 2 fuse. This is where I tapped into power for the JBL Amp.

I wanted to do the job incredibly clean without splicing so I looked for a mating connector for IL3. I couldn't find an aftermarket adapter however I saw that the 99 Toyota Camry Solara floor/interior harness has a mating connector that fits perfectly. I was able to buy a complete harness for $25 on eBay and cut off the pigtail that I needed.

I bought 5ft of 18 & 22 gauge multicolor wires on eBay and started creating the harness. This would be long enough to mount the Amp either under the passenger seat or up above the kick panel. I soldered everything together and used heat shrink wrap on the connections.

I tested the whole thing and it worked perfectly first try. Bluetooth worked, steering wheel controls worked, phone call worked, AM/FM worked, and he was able to adjust the sound level on each individual speaker. I found room to mount the amp above the kick panel though under the passenger sea would have worked too. Now I just need a GPS antenna for the Nav and I can finish this job.

I was able to do the whole job without splicing any existing wires. The whole harness is removable if he ever wishes to put the non-nav radio back in. I connected the Amp's ground wire to a body screw behind the hick panel. I used 14 gauge wire for Power & Ground as recommended by the OP.

One thing I did not connect was the Vehicle Speed Sensor wire to the Amp. To my knowledge this is used for the radio to automatically increase the volume when on the highway. The only spot I saw this wire was in the radio's existing main harness. I did not want to cut anything up and splice a wire in so I figured he can just increase the volume manually.

I attached wire diagrams from the service book. I also edited an old text wire diagram that someone created for a 2011 or so Tacoma and detailed which pins connected to each connector on my Father-in Law's 2013. If you have any questions please reach out!

 

So, there any pre-made kits for this. I personally see no point in amp or subwoofer on my truck. I don't use it to show off or be an ass and blast my music. All I want is the touchscreen and apps available on the EnTune unit. Would not mind a mpg meter and 'distance to empty' readout either.
