i have the same problem i just leave the tailgate open. It all depends on the frame size some of my friends ride small and medium frames and there bikes fit with it closed.

Tailgate down is all good as long as everything is secured!

OK, just ordered this direct from Kuat. It seemed that all of the online retailers were out of stock. I will update and snap a couple of photo's when it arrives.

I had the Sherpa 2.0 with my 16 Tacoma and it did not hit the tailgate. Just if anyone needs verification.

Currently have a rockmounts driveshaft on a 2x10 cut and fitted the the forward portion of the bed of my f150.

So heres what ive got to say about the DrTray, because i orignally wanted a NV as well but heard about the tailgate problem.

    Pros:
-both trays are adjustable forward and back as well side to side (bikes will never touch)
    -optional additional add on rack
    -comes with lock
    -no tool install
    -slim storage
    -bottle opener
-fits everything but a 20in bike, but ive seen it done
-small protection fin below the knob that tightens the rack into the hitch

    Cons:
-bike will still rattle in tray even though the rack is firm into the hitch not bad but just over very bumpy roads
-tray should probably be slightly longer to accommodate longer bike i.e. enduro, DH bikes
-Locks are debatably worthless, I would just suggest having your own lock still. (there is a lock point on the rack)

Finally got my truck last week and inaugurated my bike on it. For anyone wondering, it's possible to have the bike over the tailgate WITH a tonneau cover with the bike at an angle. If I use the outermost straps, two bikes are possible. However, my stumpy is a size small and I'm 5'7" so two larger frame bikes probably won't fit with the tonneau but it's something I was wondering about and couldn't verify until I got my truck. Anyways, it's great because I can lock the tailgate pad with the tonneau cover to prevent theft ( I saw an article where the person said theirs was stolen ). And since I've the OEM tonneau and it's heavy, I don't have to remove it.

I also have a Dakine pad - think the pad is supposed to reach the bottom of the tailgate instead of hanging high like that (then you can use the straps). I have the same setup as you with the tonneau cover on and my Bronson is diagonal. Nice rig!!

Thanks man - you too and I love that Bronson esp. that color. Good to see someone else with the setup too.

Actually the instructions (Also in video below ) say that the straps should be 1 inch below the lip and specifically not at the top. Mine are probably slightly low but not by much. I have used the strap actually.

Love that. Mounting a tray to the bumper is ideal. Gets them up and out of the way. You can still drive off road, full rear view camera vision, and no worries about cars bumping the bikes from behind.
    Want.

Agreed, but I’m easily able to fit my Giant Glory on there, and that has a 48” or 1220mm wheelbase.

my real issue with the wheelbase topic is that it doesnt allow the bike to just sit. it always to pull the bike to the rear becasue it (wants to fall off the back of the tray) which in turn doesnt allow the front wheel to sit in the tray as well as it should. if the tray was longer so the bike was able to free stand in the tray it would be far more ideal. and peace of mind on longer trips.

I was having the same issue. I think the idea is that with the shorter tray you get two advantages; 1) lighter since less material, 2) self-adjustable (with the extended tray you need to move the tire strap to compensate for changes in wheelbase).
I've had both, and I think it's a wash. What I've found to work with the Dr.Tray is to set the fork arm down, then roll the front tire toward the front of the cradle so it sits correctly, then cinch down the arm. You can get the knobs to sit in front of the arm, holding it in place and preventing rocking. I'll try and snap a pic of what I mean.

It's not perfect, but it's the easiest option. I've tried tailgate pads, in bed racks, fork mounts, trays on racks on the bed, 5 hitch racks (NV, NV 2, Thule, Rocky Mounts, and the Dr.).
I saw a member on here with a swing-out mount on a steel bumper that had the hitch mount. That, is about as perfect as it gets.
