Repaint is your only option,Toyota uses the thinnest cheapest paint there is.Toyota is only a shell of what it once was.

How long do you plan on keeping the truck? Could be a good excuse to do a color change with a vinyl wrap.

Truth is that is not a problem caused by the "thinnest cheapest paint there is". It is the clearcoat failing and the OP's truck is a 2005 so its seen 13+ years of UV damage along with any damage from chemicals (ie touchless car washes or environmental pollutants).

My wife's vehicle has clear coat that is starting to fail now and it isn't even 10 years old (non-Toyota).

Don't think so,the paint is super thin on these trucks, use a paint thickness gauge and look for yourself,Toyota is being CHEAP.

Truth is a lot of people (not saying the OP) don’t bother to take care of their paint. Think automatic car washes are good enough. Think applying wax once a year is good enough.

Paint thickness has nothing to do with a clearcoat failing.

A lot of automotive coatings have also had to be reformulated to meet environmental standards. Probably application technologies have changed as well in order to reduce waste and also meet environmental standards. I don't remember seeing cars with clear coat issues when I was a kid but these days they are common and not just for one make.

No wait, it's mostly on Jeeps. :D

Well I just got the truck like a month ago so I’m not sure how well kept the paint is but the engine has nothing wrong with it and my mechanic couldn’t find any problems so I’m planning to keep it for the long haul. I guess I’ll put some wax on today and just ride it out

Wax won't do diddly now, except maybe on panels where the clear is still intact.

Common cures are professional repaints, Macco grade repaints, DIY repaints, wraps, and bedliner refinishes.

It doesn’t really bother me it’s only on that one panel, so I’ll just leave it
