Will a 2nd gen tailgate fit on a 3rd gen if it were down all the time?

Long story short, I am getting a truck camper and want to leave the tailgate down all the the time, but do not want to leave my 3rd gen tailgate down to get dinged up. So I was thinking, if possible, to add a 2nd gen tailgate to alleviate this issue.

Can you just run with no tailgate?

Yes, as I mentioned I want to keep the tailgate on while the camper is on though.
