Yes, but when the engine is a $3500 option and diesel costs 40 cents more per gallon, it takes a long time to balance back out.

They do get off the line quick, but small diesels don't accelerate well other than off the line. Highway passing, for instance, is typically much worse than a gas engine.

Touche on price. It will still be more expensive on maintenance as well. Passing; they’ll pass in a hurry too lol. They just stay in the powerband.

Reason i got a tacoma is for its size, ease of getting into parking lots, bed and off road a bit. I think it has plenty of power. Diesel is just torquier and probably wont need an ect always on mod lol. I agree gas is a better overall option for these trucks

On a full size, sure, but the midsize diesels are kind of pigs.

For instance, on the Colorado the 3.6 does 50-70 in 4.6 seconds, the diesel is 7.3. 0-90 on the gas is 12.9, diesel is 23.2 (nearly double the time). Even the 0-30 is quicker on the gas engine.

I’ve never driven the baby d-max. I’m comparing with jeep eco diesel on my butt dyno lol. Jeep eco diesel my mom has is just as quick if not quicker as a 2016 4runner the wife had. Much better fuel economy to go with it. I guess the 8speed tranny helps on that as well. Ecodiesel is never hunting gears either

....huh? Most small diesels still get their peak torque from barely over idle. Cost and fuel economy aside, the practicality of diesels in trucks in general, works well.

Nope. Not sure if it's due to non-compliance with crash safety standards (Canadian regs intentionally mimic American regs), or due to extra duties importing them from Argentina.

Note the Hilux has not been sold in Japan for more than a decade. No such thing as "JDM" for our trucks.
