I would look a little weird, but you could fold the back of the cover.

But as I've said before, I think people overvalue the ability to open the cover. Stop and think how many times you REALLY need to open it. For those times, the rack can just be taken off.

Very true that's it's odd that both boxes were opened but I myself inspected it and noticed only a few strip of tape were used to seal the boxes. Boxes were heavy so tape couldn't hold the weight.

We tape those boxes to death.

We've never had one come open on accident.

Somebody was messing with those boxes, obviously.

Removing the rack and bolts is relatively easy. I did have to go get the carriage bolts and nuts for the tonneau brackets. I purchased 1 inch 3/8 bolts as they were the shortest I could find. If I run across 3/4 in I will probably try them, I have to instal and remove the bolts with the tonneau out of the way currently. I have test fitted both my J hooks and my Car topper (sears Xcargo or something) and am pleased.

Agreed, "boxes were tape to death" around but obviously not at the top of the lid...

Any updates on a solution that works with a diamondback cover?

Goal: functional diamondback cover with hard top tent above cab or bed, '17 double cab tacoma, 5' bed.

The KB Voodoo rack is amazing but I really do value accessing the bed with the diamondback panels - I like the trays that are elevated from bed, so slider doesn't automatically solve the problem. The edges of the cover are obstructed by the bed rack mounts (U shape around tonneau at deck top), which you can see in a few places on the forum.

Are there any new hacks around this? I've been watching like a hawk and haven't seen anything. Whether I mount a tent above the cab or bed, I think I will need at least one crossmember in the bed... I've thought about using the center crossmember of the diamondback as a base for a rack mount. What do you guys think?

...would love to hear what you guys think.

Have seen this: http://www.kbvoodoo.com/shop/utility-rack-for-tonneau-covers but it's only 400lb weight limit static... I'm using a three person tent.

Hi, there. While the KB Voodoo UTRC is the best option I've seen for a rtt setup and still be able to utilize the Diamondback cover, I have the same reservation with that static weight limit. A rtt w/ bedding items is about 200lbs+ and two adults are easily going to be over 100lbs each. I was thinking I can buy another set of posts w/ crossbar to have a total of three of them that could possibly support the total weight of a usable rtt setup. I'd need to double check with KB Voodoo to see if that's even possible with the accessory rack connecting the front and back posts. A cheaper option I was thinking of is to put some 4x4 posts on the center crossmember of the Diamondback cover underneath the rtt.

I'm new to trucks in general and still haven't used the 4x4 options with the '17 dcsb TRD Off Road Taco I drive. I'm not doing serious off-roading or overlanding, but would like to try some off-the-ground-tent truck camping. For now, I'm gonna test out a 2-person backpacking tent on top of the HD Diamondback cover. The tent is 84''x50'', so it has about a foot of overhang behind the tailgate area. I'm going to try to strap down a folding table underneath the tent so that there's a "shelf" going past the tailgate. Also, I'd need to find a way to anchor down the tent and rainfly well since this setup isn't how it's designed to be anchored down. It won't be as secure and as cool as an overlanding rtt setup on a bedrack, but it's gonna be lighter and a little more affordable. As I get more experience in overlanding / truck camping, I can try to find better upgrades.IMG_2835.jpg IMG_2838.jpg IMG_2836.jpg IMG_2837.jpg IMG_2841.jpg IMG_2839.jpg IMG_2840.jpg

What a scrappy solution! Don't forget the ground pad! Nicee

Yeh, it doesn't seem there's a good solution to be able to raise the front and rear panels of the diamondback, with a stronger bed rack today.

So, I'm planning to go another direction. I'm looking at a Leitner Designs or Wilco Offroad full height rack, matched with Decked drawer system. This setup allows more room for cargo. When everything is delivered, I'll evaluate if a crossmember is needed above the cab or not, for HTT. If yes, I'll put in one low profile crossmember, or a roof rack, depending. I don't love roof racks so, hopefully I can just position the tent over the bed rack.

@n00bco Thanks for the encouragement and advice. I plan to get more padding for the floor, but I do have this, for now...
    IMG_2842.jpg

I think those of us who decided on the Diamondback covers probably weren't initially interested or weren't planning on doing a RTT setup when we got them. Somewhere along the way in exploring how we can expand the usage of our trucks w/ Diamondback covers, we thought, "Hey! That rooftop tent looks great! I like that rig setup like that." Or, "Man, I wanna go camping or go overlanding with the truck when I'm not using it for work. How can I set up a rig to go do that?" (Well, I don't know about others, but that's what happened to me. I watch too much youtube, I guess, and need to do more research before buying stuff. Sometimes, though, I find it fun to have some trial and error learning experiences.) Diamondback does a good job at advertising their covers. At some point I thought, "I could probably haul a AW11 on top of that cover on the back of the Tacoma." Maybe, I just fantasized too much as to what I can do with that cover on the truck. ...could I use the KB Voodoo URTC, put an atv in the center and a rooftop tent above that? Nah, the atv might be too tall. Sorry for the rambling. As KB Voodoo mentioned in a previous post, #84, we may be just overvaluing the ability to open the cover as designed and could just do a little more planning.

The Leitner Designs and Wilco Offroad products look like great options. I just learned about Dissent's rack systems. Have you seen those? Just out of curiosity, do you plan to get rid of the Diamondback cover if you go with the Decked and bed rack systems? Or, just swap them off and on depending on what you plan to use the truck for at a given time? That was another option I was thinking of doing. Storing whatever system I'm not using shouldn't be a big issue if the bed rack system can be easily disassembled to smaller components without disassembling it completely. The Diamondback cover is obviously fairly easy to remove, store and reinstall. I hope your plans and final set up can be a great success and that you can enjoy them without any regrets.

I hear that, I agree that I'm probably overvaluing opening the diamondback. I'm actually replacing the tailgate with a Wilco tiregate, so the actual reach into my 5' bed will be really manageable (especially for coolers/similar turned long ways). But, you know, I do like the decked setup too. Tough call...

@KB Voodoo can your Tacoma bed rack system mount onto the hi-rise crossbar brackets (rather than the bed rack brackets for tonneau covers) so that the bed rack legs clear a Diamondback cover? If it is possible, what would be the dynamic and static load capacities of that kind of attachment setup?

Note: I called them and they confirmed that the bed rack with the tonneau cover brackets can clear the height and work with the Diamondback covers. However, as with other covers, they can't be opened with the bedrack system installed. Long tubs/bins with reachable handles or drawer systems seem to be the best way to access gear in the bed when combining a bed rack system with tonneau bed covers.

I have this same cover. Just wondering what kind of trimming you had to do and if you have a picture of what you trimmed? The bike set up is what I need!
