In my experience, any tuner using the Cobb Accessport platform usually charges for custom e-tuning anyway. Base maps for free or a base map with one or two revisions based on datalogs for cheap, and then full tuning is more expensive from there. Partly why it's frustrating when people don't understand that entering in your mod list into a website and receiving your maps isn't custom tuning lol

Point being, I know where you're coming from with your earlier comments. Mat's future tuning services will be true custom maps because we'll datalog, send in the logs, receive a new revision, rinse and repeat until complete

    Hey Mat,

Is a tip in that is between 1.04 and 1.03 achievable?

Seems to me if you get 6-8 different vehicle configurations of tunes you will likely cover 99% of the setups people have

Another 40 miles driving (175 total now), observations:

Overall my truck feels healthier than it ever has.

    - zero flaring, at all - very clean
    - transitions from low to high load are much smoother and natural
    - tip-in for me is pretty nice. have to put a bit more skinny pedal into it, but I'd prefer that especially for city driving. it's predictable and not harsh
    - zero surging. nada. even the common surges I've always experienced even since stock pulling into my garage or backing up have not shown themselves at all and that's between 80 degree days and 30 degree mornings
    - 3rd gear IS holding longer on slower speeds 20-35mph. not a massive issue but especially when coasting, feels like it should be in 4th
    - Coasting downhill in ECT = downshift from 4 to 3 with the RPMs winding up to 4,000 on deceleration which is something I've not experienced previously. It's not really engine braking either, at least it didn't feel that way based on speed.
    - 5th probably does hold a bit too long on the highway with stock tires/wheels. it did take until over 70 to get it to 6th. this is the least of my issues but I would say that when you get over 60-65 with low load, an upshift to 6th is OK. I'm not one who is concerned about a dance between 5th and 6th though given how smooth the transitions are with 1.04 the shift doesn't feel much different than a slight increase in throttle
    - definitely feel the truck hanging onto 5th even on acceleration when moving too, but doing so by unlocking the TC which "feels" like a downshift to 4th. would be interested to learn what the benefits are of this vs. the downshift to 4th in that scenario but the transition feels pretty smooth overall
    - idle and overall truck performance is so damn smooth - seriously smoother than I've ever felt it, amongst some of the (I thought I'd never say this about my truck) smoothest of any vehicles I've owned in many respects
    - MPGs for me are about the same. I generally see 17mpgs for my commutes that are 15-20 miles of 50% city / secondary roads with lots of stop/go/hills/lights and 50% interstate that's often rolling along, occasionally stop and go, and often can cruise up to 70-75 if not in traffic. even though it would be easy to say cruising in 3rd is killing MPGs in residential areas I'm not seeing a massive impact on MPGs and at least it's easy to maintain a slow speed

But so far everything about the tune has been wonderful, and any tweaks i'd look for are simply around the shifting. I feel like 4th is the sweet spot for this truck when not on the highway so I'm fine with it going through a normal shift cycle and holding at 4th until over 45-49 (regardless of load) with 5th holding up to 60-65, then up to 6th thereafter. I also am not a fan of just forcing it to hold overdrive if the truck "wants" and needs to downshift to maintain a reasonable load on the engine. I haven't seen any issues per se but I could see where folks want it to stay in OD gears but in those scenarios if you're trying to push those tall gears too hard you are doing zero favors to your MPGs and load gets pretty high when you're holding 6th to climb a hill. It will do it, but take a look at your engine load %

I’m only one size up in tire with stock wheels and 300lbs armor. Slightly more tip-in with 1.04 would be ideal...and I mean slightly

Why not flash 1.03 until the custom tunes are available?

Thought about doing this. I can care less about the surging but could not stand the falling flat on slow turn...

@TacoSauceHB the 2016 tacoma is a 3.5l v6^ Not sure if referencing a different year or made a typo

Edit-18hp just with a CAI is a huge improvment! Got any pics of the dyno graphs?

. I hear that a lot on this forum, but you guys are missing the bigger picture with the aftermarket CAI's. It hyas nothing to do with temperature and everything to do with air flow. If you pop your hood and look at your stock intake, there is a huge box thing attached which is a charcoal canister for epa/smog stuff. That extra piece is very restrictive to air flow. When you replace it with a wide open pipe, it get a lot more air into the engine. Logic says this would cause 1 of 2 scenarios.

    A. The air/fuel mixture would become leaner.
    B. The MAF/ECU would recognize the increase air flow and make adjustments to air/fuel mixture accordingly.

The K&N 77 series has a 18hp gain and they back it up with Dyno sheet from a 2016 TRD 3.4l. If you add something that changes air flow and horsepower/torque you would think that would also play into the tune right?. On my streetbike I had a tune and every time I upgraded something I would have to re flash it and list the modification. It always made a difference when I did that too. Not sure if this tune works the same way.

I would ask Matt but i have been black listed by him from bugging too much so he just ignores me now.

It seems like a lot of members read other threads saying CAI robs HP and kills MPG and brings in hot air so aka "waste of money" . Sometimes It pays to do your own research. I freaking love my K&N , sounds awesome and the power gain is noticeable. mpg also went up.
