General Grabber A/TX

Just saw we started getting them in the warehouse.

 

Nice looking tire.

 

I got my 315’s mounted today. So far, these tires are great. Obviously, coming from a 36” swamper, the ATX is dramatically quieter. Very smooth tire, and looks good IMO.

 

The ATX is the same tire as my AT2s. Just a redesigned sidewall

 

Are these out yet? I don't see them on @Discount Tire Direct website. I would be interested in the 275/70/17s

Seriously looking at these when my Destination ATs go tits up. I hope there not just LT tires, I'm looking for P rated

The new General Grabber ATX is the latest generation Grabber with all the latest technologies. Discount tire Direct does not have the 275/70R-17 size in stock but you can order them. I just checked and they are in stock.

Yes, but on a different vehicle. I'm a previous 2007 TRD Pro Taco owner. I inherited an '04 Colorado 4x4 Z71 about 10 years ago and couldn't justify keeping a truck I was leasing for ~$300/month vs. a free truck, albeit an inferior truck.

On my Colorado, I was replacing some Firestone Destination A/T tires that I was able to get nearly 80k miles out of. I loved my Destination A/T's. Traction was fantastic and handling was really good for an A/T. It was especially impressive in wet/snowy conditions. The first few years I had the tires I never had to use 4WD. Overall, I really had no complaints about the Destinations. My reasoning for going with the General's this time was:

1) I almost bought the Gen I General Grabbers but decided the stiffer sidewall of the Destinations (at that time) was more appealing because most of my driving is on-road.
2) I don't believe the Destination A/T's have been updated since I purchased them years ago. The Grabbers are now on their 3rd generation.
3) I've had a couple other sets of General tires on other vehicles (Civic & Sienna) and I've liked them, especially when it comes to "bang for your buck".
4) I'm really picky about my tires and so tire weight is a big factor for me. The Destination A/T's weigh 43 lbs. new and the Grabber A/Tx weigh 38 lbs. new. That made the Grabber's really appealing.
5) As luck would have it, I was getting ready to put another set of Destination A/T's on my truck when I saw that General was getting ready to push out this latest version of the Grabber, now called the Grabber A/Tx. Once I started reading about it having a stiffer sidewall, a tad wider tread and it being a better looking tire from the side, I was all in.
6) General was offering a $70 rebate on them and other General tires through April 15th, which I was able to qualify for. The tire shop wanted about $50 more per tire for the BFG KO's so that right there is a $270 savings over a very popular alternative. I paid $150/tire for the Grabber's, not including the rebate.

So, last week I had the Grabber A/Tx in 31x10.5x15 installed (factory size on my Colorado is 265/75R15). I have to say, I'm already in love with them. I love the aggressive tread and overall looks. One of the first things I noticed when driving was that I could feel more of the road surface, but not in a bad way. The additional feedback I'm getting from the road, even though present, feels well dampened. It's hard to describe because you'd think that if you're feeling more of the road surface, it would be a harsher ride. But that's definitely not the case. I believe the stiffer sidewall of the Gen III Grabber contributes to more feedback of the road surface, but the "Comfort Balance Technology" that they added allows that feedback to be more gentle, if you will. Again, it's hard to explain but I really like it. I feel more aware of the road surface, but it's comfortable.

Steering is a little "slower" than the Destinations A/T's but I've got a whole lot of tread on the Grabber's whereas I had very little left on the Destinations. Plus, I've got less than 500 miles on them at this point so I don't think the "factory coating" has completely worn off.

I'm blown away by how quiet they are. I thought my Destinations were quiet, but these are SO much quieter. I feel like my truck has been fully insulated all the sudden, haha! I'm hearing my engine and exhaust like I've never heard it before (a good thing, IMO). Overall, it's whisper quiet in my truck now. Once I get up to 40-45 mph, I can start to hear some faint tread noise, but it's still far quieter than my Destinations.

Traction is good so far, but I haven't pushed them since they are new. The other day we had a cold rain (mid-30 degrees) and I had no issues and didn't lose any confidence in my traction. I've not taken them off-road yet.

Overall, I could not be happier so far. I'd highly recommend them. I'll try to come back and post updates here every once in a while.

Again, I'm still trying to see the difference in these and the AT2s I have on my truck right now. Beside the fancy sidewall rimjob.

I messaged General about the differences, a side-by-side comparison, but got no response. A month ago. If they're better, I'd run em. If not, I'll try to get the X3.

 

From what I understand, a stiffer sidewall. And I believe the "Comfort Balance Technology" is new.

 

I ran down to about 12 psi at the last meet in March (not intended to go that low). Never blew a bead and it drove great!
I didn't feel they needed a better sidewall. But I'm E load and LT 245/75 r16, not C load or P-metric size

There's even a couple shallow rock slashes in the sidewall of 2 tires and another one had a nail so it's patched. I like to live dangerously
Tons of life left in these AT2s, they won't wear out for quite a while as long as I keep the truck aligned. I will look to a different MT tire, unless I get a killer deal on the X3 lightly used, and will keep the AT2 for daily.

 

I'm not much of an off-roader, but I like to have the assurance of good A/T tread if/when I do. You and I probably have different needs in an A/T so I'm definitely not implying you should change tires. In fact, I'd run those AT2's till their end-of-life. No sense in changing tires if you're happy with what you've got. As you pointed out, alignment is key. I also rotated my Destinations every 10k miles.

 

Glad to see this. I LOVE my AT2s...so much that I'm on my 4th set on 3 vehicles. First set went on an '05 Kia Sorento, Second and fourth sets on my Tacoma, and the third set on a '14 4Runner. I've run them on rock, in sand, in snow, in mud, and pretty much everything in between. I wrote General a while back after the new KO2 came out and suggested an updated sidewall. The response that I got was crap: "If you want a more aggressive tread, check out our..." The person who responded kind of missed the point. Glad they listened though, as I assume others had the same comment.

 

Despite the crappy response you received, it's good to see that General actually listens to their customers. So many companies forget that customer feedback is vitally important to the success of their product.

 

I think this is going to make my tire decision a lot easier
