So I have a rerouted and chopped exhaust with an Aeroturbine 2525XL muffler welded in. I liked it at first but it's been getting on my nerves, it's not bad at cruising speeds, but damn when its under load it's loud as hell. I was thinking of welding a resonator in front of the muffler to quiet it down a bit or getting a quieter muffler.

I've also heard of people running dual mufflers with a smaller one in front to mellow the sound down.

Just looking for recommendations or examples. I've done a few searches and can't find anything definitive.

    X2.
Have this with a borla. With a high flow cat. And the resonator REALLY cleans it up and tames it down. Quite a bit actually. Maybe more than I wanted it to. But I love it. Of course I bet it'll be different with that loud ass aero.

I took my spare out from under the bed and it takes it down a little, but I am gonna end up doing something about it. Thanks for the info. Sounding like a stadium truck is fun sometimes but it can get annoying. Lol

Yuuuuuuuup. Why I went with borlaaaaaa. Ha jk. I like the aero turbine sound. But it's just way too loud. Not sure how the resonator will do with that. I'm sure there's a vid you could find on YouTube of that setup. Car remember if I watched any like that it not. Should be enough to tame it down. Would work better than a second muffler id think.

Where's it dumped? Before the axle? Think that causes unnecessary resonance/drone as well. Might think about adding a tail pipe exited out the side before rear tire or something like that. Think that would help a lot too. And would be cheap if you can find someone to bend it for you if you can't. Idk. Just throwing ideas out there. Certainly not an expert. Just my thoughts.

It's dumped after the axle. I'm gonna do a little more research and I'll post what I end up doing.

If you get a muffler that isn't loud you solve the problem...

It's not like loud equals more power or better mpgs.

The muffler on my truck was a bargain deal. It's out of a totaled V8 SUV. I got it for a steal. Just get yourself some factory muffler off a totaled vehicle that is quiet and cheap, you'll be good to go.

I'm aware sound doesn't = power or mpg. If I wanted super quiet I would have kept the stock exhaust, but I wanted a bit more sound and the research I did showed the 2525XL to have a good tone but it changed when I chopped it. I have the stock muffler off my truck and the stock muffler off my old STI in the garage. I want something with a nice tone and mimimal rasp.

If you go to an exhaust shop and tell them you want it quieter they'll figure it out for you. There isn't a huge market for quieter exhausts like there is for noisier more aggressive ones, so researching mufflers and resonators online will probably end up convincing you to spend more money than necessary when any exhaust shop should be able to get you sorted for a couple hunned.

Yeah, I think I'm just gonna take it to the local shop here that did my reroute and chop. I'll report back with the results.

So I bought a Tacoma 2011 V6 double cab PreRunner Sport with a FlowMaster muffler, not sure which model, installed by previous owner. Anyway, it sounded nice and growly, throaty, meaty, manly, (your description here). But after driving it to work and home (60 miles a day) and to visit my parents (180 round trip), the drone is giving my 47 year old head a migraine!!

Any suggesstions on a muffler & exhaust replacement, or a resonator? I want a quiet muffler, no drone, but don't want to break the bank. All suggestions and insults will be appreciated.

If you're happy with the aggressiveness of your muffler but can't stand the drone then adding a resonator into the exhaust system will help. A resonator will reduce the interior resonance (drone) while not severely impacting the exterior tone. If you are looking to tame the aggressiveness of the muffler as well I don't see much relief by adding a resonator, you may want to replace the muffler entirely. Cost wise the addition of a resonator should be a little cheaper than replacing the muffler but in most cases the associated costs will be similar. If you have questions about which Flowmaster Muffler that you have or need exhaust replacement options please give us a call at 707-544-4761 and our Support Team will be more than happy to assist. Don't forget to ask for your Tacoma Forum member discount.

What kind of discount? I'm trying to decide between 819144 Cat-back System 409S - Single Side Exit - dBX® Series or just get a 44, 50, or dBX series muffler.
