Secure/lockable Tonneau + RTT Bed Rack

Hey, y’all.

So... I’ve had my Taco for just over a year now and I’m itching to throw on a bed rack and rooftop tent. I’ve hit the point where I don’t want to setup a tent on the ground ever again. Call me lazy, call me old, it’s just where I’m at...

In addition to the rack and RTT, I also want a tonneau that can be closed AND secured in addition. I’ve searched the threads and found several good setups, but they all have tonneaus that roll up and can’t be locked/secured. Looking for some off the shelf setups, preferably, that can achieve this. Any suggestions?

I've been eyeing their bed racks as well and currently have a Bakflip MX4. The only common issue I see is not being able to flip open the bed cover but if you use a soft rollable or even a retractable one then that might work for you with the brackets.

 

That’s pretty sweet! Any idea how much weight these brackets can support? It doesn’t say much on the site. If I could find a good retractable and securable cover, that may just be perfect! Thanks for the link.

 

I have no idea. Probably worth calling them and finding out. I'd imagine its pretty comparable to the design capacity of the rack itself considering the entire rack would be sitting on the brackets. Let me know if you do find out though.
Also, the MX4 cover latches shut and can only be opened by lowering the tailgate to reach a pull cable. For the 2016's this is a minor inconvenience because the tailgate lock is the valet key but i'm pretty sure for the other years it's the same as the fob keys. I shopped around a lot for mine and managed to snag it for $700 installed awhile back.

 

Does anybody know if those voodoo racks work with the bakflip mx4? Just ordered one.

 

I was thinking about getting em but you have two issues, the mx4 drops the rails a couple of inches. The second is the rack is meant for soft and hard tops without tracks. Our MX4 has tracks that are pretty weak so the plate can’t sneak under it unless you install the tracks on top of the plate which will then lose the ability of waterproofing.

I just had a bed rack made that directly bolts into the side of my bed and if I need the full use of the the bed, I just unscrew four bolts on each side and comes off easily.

 

The kbvoodoo will work with oem tonneau and can flip 1/3 but only for longbed

This is built for exactly what you want. I almost bought one but went with a GoFastCamper (full cap) instead. This with a RTT is PERFECT, in my opinion of course.

If you are wondering how it’s bolted on, I had them build a bracket inside the sides of the bed. If you pop the trim off it’s really easy to get to it since there are holes on top. You don’t need brackets, you can just drill a small hole on the metal plates between the larger holes and weld a nut. With the bracket though, it acts as a bed reinforcement and this thing is built like a tank. No play what so ever and I overdid it and told them to use DOM tubing which can hold up the whole vehicle with a single bar.

Can hold 400 pounds of static weight and is height adjustable for backflip tonneaus. I bought a used OEM tonneau for 400 btw and it's been great for 2 camping trips.

So the MX4 isn’t very secure ?

 

I mean nothing is secure unless you get something like diamondback. Mx4 only has a rating of 400 lbs on top of it and it bends in like hell.

It’ll put people off from stealing anything since they’ll see it’s covered, but you can technically pry it open.

 

The retrax covers are lockable and will slide under the bed racks that are compatible with covers. This is my homemade rack but there are racks out there that will work with bed covers.

 

Pretty secure and I have a 200 + lbs tent that holds pretty well off-roading too.

 

I have a pace edwards ultra groove metal retractable tonneau cover that would work for an RTT if you added a third rail. My cover rolls and locks easily so I can have toys, friends, and secure storage for all our gear.

Retrax and USA Truck Covers are worth considering too. I just liked the sturdy integration of the rail system on the Pace Edwards Cover. As others have mentioned, some of these cover are compatible with other rack systems like Mobtown Off-road bed rails. The bed rails can be relatively inexpensive compared to buying Thule or Yakima bars and have the ability to handle more dynamic loads.
