I use birch hooks all the time when I'm manhandling firewood. Especially if you're dealing with 4 foot cord length stuff a birch hook makes it a LOT easier.

Edit- Every single one of these 4 footers was heaved in to the back of the truck and moved to my firewood lot on the lower end of the property (and then unloaded and stacked) by hand, and it would have taken me a LOT longer to wrangle them without using a birch hook at one end.

Mine are all the old-school ones, with a forged point that isn't replaceable. But, they're also all probably 30+ years old and other than missing all the paint on the handles they're still like new. :notsure:

You've got the fancy enameled cast iron, you show off. Mine's just the old black style. But, the fact that it rusts if you leave it in a damp basement and don't maintain it meant that I got it for a steal ($450 for a Hearthstone? Sign me up!) :D

Better deal than me, but I paid 1200 plus a Waterford Erin stove for this one, I've had days where it's -10 and I've got the windows open. This thing will drive you out if you aren't careful.

If it is madrone , split it immediately or you will have to wait a year or more

I originally thought it was madrone when I saw it, but the end grain seems much wider than the madrone I have that I got last year from similar sized logs.

Depends on the growing conditions , I've seen pretty wide rings in local madrone

The bark looks like sycamore to me. Not a bad firewood, but goes punky very quickly if you're not careful.

Sorry. Forgot to update. Verified that it is sycamore by taking a chunk over to the forest service folks.
Not too worried about rot from getting wet. All of the wood storage is off the ground atleast 6". I will probably haul some of it out to my camp property for campfire wood since there is nothing but sagebrush out there.

I've never seen a sycamore tree

Aren't they not native in Oregon ?

The logs came from a private lot up in washington and were headed to a custom furniture shop down in california. Apparently they were 10k+ overweight and had to unload some weight. Said they would not be coming back up to get it and that I could have it of I wanted. The 4 logs I got ranged from 6-10 feet long.
