    Hey all,
Can anyone tell me if I should put Lucas in before or after an oil change? Someone told me to put it in right before I change the oil. If that's the case, then do I put a full quart in my V6 4 Liter? Do I need to drain a quart before putting it in? I'm hoping it will quiet the lifters a bit. Thanks!

Believe it or not, it does not mention draining your oil before putting it in. There is no indication as to weather or not one should use it before or during the oil change in lieu of one quart of oil.

Just ignore the lifter tick! It's completely normal. When you add Lucas to your oil you are increasing viscosity, especially when it's cold. It could likely prevent sufficient lubrication to parts of the engine as well as added strain to your oil pump. That being said, I've owned two trucks with the 1GR-FE engine. My last truck had 200k miles on it, still ran like it did when it was new. My current Tacoma does it. Every other Tacoma I've driven does it. It's just one of the characteristics of this engine.

Agree with you guys (never put anything other than oil in the engine for sure) that the 1GR is a noisy engine, valvetrain and vacuum switches ticking and stuff are completely normal. Still some ticks are ticks you need to worry about, perhaps a VVT solenoid or a failing oil pump. So if your Taco tick is a worse tick than other Taco ticks you might have a tick mechanic make sure your tick doesn't mean an impending boom.

Interesting. I didn't know this. A lot of people swear by the Lucas even if the tick is normal. Now I'm definitely reconsidering whether or not to use it. I have however used seafoam many times and I notice a performance improvement every single time.

If you go to any auto parts store and look for the little Lucas display. Spin the little handle on both sides. You'll notice the side with the Lucas/Oil mix is considerbally harder to turn than the side with plain oil. That's what is happening to your oil pump. I'm sure Lucas products have their place. I'm sure they work great in small simple engines, like for lawn mowers. But our engines are far more complex with tiny passeges for the VVT amongst other lubrication points.

Like @DaveInDenver said, If your engine is seemingly healthy I wouldn't worry about it. I'm not there to hear it so I assume you are talking about the normal 'Taco Tick'. If you are unsure, you should probably have someone else look at it.

Lucas oil and practically every gas additive is the epitome of marketing gimmicks.

These are the things you try when you have a problem and want to try to avoid doing anything about it. That being the "Hope and pray it's not a rod bearing so what have I got to lose?" stage. If your engine is in good shape there's nothing to be gained using them.

    OME and worth every penny.
You don't have lifters. Pushrod engines have lifters. You can check your valve clearances if you think your tick is excessive but they tend to tighten, not loosen. Especially on the exhaust side. When tight, they get quieter.
