What have you done to your Tacoma today? 1st Gen Edition

Installed a scan guage with a paranoid fabrication mount.

 

Barely got into wheeling last year, still learning all of the different kind of suspensions that are out there. I might have to break something on my 2WD as an excuse for 4x4 parts (gf complains about spending money on truck joke). I also read in that thread that SAS is for hardcore off-roaders so no use for it at the moment, but possibly for something in the future.

 

Guess I'm going to have to buy a welder soon

 

you can get into plenty of trouble with just mid travel and lockers.

Then there is Long travel vs SAS. Depends on what you want to do with the truck.

Seeing as you just started and don't even have 4wd yet. You need a LOT more seat time to figure out what you want.

 

In AZ there are a ton of older trucks since rust isn't a factor. Look for an 85 pickup or 4runner, or a 60 or 80 series cruiser if you want to stay Toyota. You can likely pick one up and put some money into it for less than it would cost to sas your Tacoma.

@Blackdawg you're right, I really don't know what I want/need yet. Might just go with @pittim idea and get an older one to work on. Still want to 4WD swap on my current one to get an idea of how it is put together and how it all mechanically functions.

nothing wrong with that. One only has to go look at Sila's build from a prerunner to an IFS crawler on 37s to know that its possible.

Just need to spend the time to figure out what you want to do with it. Don't rush that either. Redoing things isn't always fun. and costs more.

 

Definitely middle to back end. I'll look when the rain lets up.

 

I think I paid $950 at DSM a couple of years ago. Mine are their standard non-resi version they sell for 1st gens.

So, an extra $400 for the resis eh?

If this is a daily driver, don't do it, just go with a long travel.
If you plan to rock crawl it, then go ahead.

You must have done something wrong because its one of the best thing ive done to mine and still drives well on the street with 37s and leaf springs. Dailyd it for over a year as well with no complaints.

 

I see no obvious signs of ujoint play. Center support does have some though. I’m gonna try to put some oil on it just for shits and giggles
