Warrensburg volunteer checking in... In the third photo, I'm carrying the American Flag for our annual 9/11 memorial which includes 15 surrounding volunteer fire departments.

Because it's volunteer and not career? :notsure: We're only required to shave once a year, and that's for our yearly mask fit test. A bunch of us have beards.

So how does the mask fit with a beard? Y'all must not get any fires. Our volunteer station has a policy that we must be clean shaven. A lot of guys don't necessarily shave every day but every other day or so to allow a proper seal with the SCBA.

And the beard will change whether the mask will seal against the face. You cannot get a seal . Protect yourself and shave or give up firefighting .

Same for weight loss or gain.

We have between 250-300 calls a year, which doesn't include medical assist. We're only a town of 4,000 people. I personally have never had an issue getting a seal with a beard. Our chief even has a beard and all but one line officer has a beard or some sort of heavy facial hair.

I was active duty Air Force for 10 years and currently Air National Guard, have a shaving waiver for medical reasons, and have taken many gas mask fit tests with facial hair and pass every single time.

Huh, well consider me jealous. I'm not trying to argue with you, it just goes against all "popular beliefs" and most station policies. Yall are lucky to have that.

Registered Nurse checking in here. 35 years' worth, including 8 years as a USAF Flight Nurse, served in Operation Just Cause and Operation Desert Storm. Also been an E.R. Nurse, ICU Nurse, and for most of my career, an Operating Room Nurse, specializing in Neurosurgery and Spine surgery, have also done a fair amount of Open Heart early on. Part of my ICU experience was in a maximum security prison hospital. Didn't want the tee-shirt after it was over.

Much as I've enjoyed my career, I'm about "Nursed out"; ready to hang up my shingle and retire in another year and a half.

The facial hair policy has always been a hot topic. It was recently discussed at a township level where I live. My department completes annual fit testing. A few years back one guy passed fit testing with a beard. Shaved and retested with no difference in the results. I think facial hair is ok as long as it’s kept reasonable and you pass fit testing. We have more of an issue with peoples changing face piece size from year to year.

From what I’ve seen on social media (before no shave November) Cali has quite a few departments that are lax about facial hair policy, much more lax than around here.
Based on your experiences is this assessment accurate?

I would recommend it highly. a lot of departments are going to all Firefighter/Paramedic positions. If you have the means, definitely YES!!
