A few people have asked for how I did my hidden snorkel. Sorry for the limited photos towards the end I forgot to take them.

    Tools:
    Sockets
    Reciprocating saw
    Grinder
    Beer
    PVC cement

    Supplies:
All are 3" pvc I ended up changing my arrangment half way through but using a small straight pvc as an adapter fixed it for me. Heres what I used
    2 ~ 90 degree female to female
    1 ~ 45 degree female to male
    Straight pvc section

First off remove your fender and stock air baffle, then the cutting begins. I've circled the areas in which I cut.
    20170204_103908.jpg
Another view. You will have to cut inside as well shown by the left circle. I used the reciprocating saw for this. Trim the inside until you can fit a 3" pvc pipe in.
    20170204_121427.jpg
    Lots of cutting
    20170204_122513.jpg
Next is to mock up the pvc I went from the airbox back.
    20170204_121457.jpg
A little too long but starting to look good
    20170204_121451.jpg
sits right next to the air conditioning intake.
    20170205_171138.jpg
Here is a horrible rendition of what it looks like. A piece of straight tubing goes inside the airbox and I reused the oem rubber piece. On the other end I made a small spacer to allow 2 females to attach. This allowed me to angle the tip up away from the drainage area.
    whatitlookslike.jpg
Of course I forgot to take a final picture.
I've had this mod for a few months now and I'm still glad I did it. Since the oem intake had a baffle the truck is slightly louder but sounds more meatier than ricey. Also when the rpm gets close to redline you can hear a whooshing noise. My favorite part is the stock airbox hasn't been touched.

That's pretty slick. And it's completely hidden with the fender back on?

Also this happened 2 months ago. :bananadead:

If I didn't move my intake I'm sure it would have been way worse than just drying carpet.

I'm happy that even with an engine bay covered in mud, the air filter was clean. The wheel wells were packed as well which is where the stock air pulls in. This mod is totally worth it.

If you ever have reason to pull the fender again, I'd love to see where you actually cut.

@5 Lug Fury Are you sure you used 4" PVC for this?

I just picked up supplies to install this while I was fitting my fiberglass. I bought 4" schedule 40 PVC pipe and fittings based on your write up, and I had my fender off today to start fitting the fender. However, I noted that there's no way that 4" PVC will fit into the opening where the resonator goes. The hole in the sheet metal is 4" and the ID of the rubber coupler is 3.5". If your PVC slipped into the rubber coupler without modification, you're running 3" PVC.

4" PVC is 4.5" OD, so there's no chance of it mating with the airbox to resonator coupler without a bunch of work. I'm already thinking of ways to make the 4" PVC work, but I thought I would ask to get clarification and maybe save someone else this issue in the future.

You are 100% correct. I went and check the left overs I had and it is 3". I did this write up a few months after I did the actual mod. Sorry for the mix up.

If the 4" does work out please post some pics and let us know.

Glad I found this writeup, I had talked to a few taco owners with snorkels and they were downright confused when i asked if they'd considered a hidden snorkel. deffinatly on my list of mods. Thanks for the writeup Kenny:thumbsup:

It's been a while since I've taken my fender off. I think its pretty clear that the snorkel has helped me from ingesting water and mud. Luckily I can still use this set up with my v8 swap

Did the 90 degree elbow closest to your airbox just slip on after you trimmed the inside of the elbow?

I only trimmed the other end so it sits better in the fender. For the airbox there's a small straight piece that went into the airbox and was attached with a large zip tie.

Hi guys just signing up to say thank you for this absolutely brilliant idea. I was able to adopt it to to my Australian 1997 LandCruiser Prado (5VZ-FE) which looks similar to your Tacomas including the location of the intake ports.

I really dislike the look of snorkels, let alone cutting holes on my panels. And this solves that problem.

The Prado has got a small "chamber" between the engine bay and outside fender which makes a perfect location for air intake.

I made a small video on the build:

    Cheers from OZ

I got the chance to test this hidden snorkel. There is no way I would have came out of this unscathed with the original intake
