Mounting RTTs to Prinsu Racks

Here’s one way to mount an RTT to a Prinsu rack:

I have a Smittybilt RTT and mount it to my Prinsu cabrack using (6) 1/4” x 1-1/2” carriage bolts, (6) allen head 1/4” x 1” Furniture T-nuts and (6) 1/4” x 3” flat washers. All hardware purchased from True Value.

I drilled 6 holes through the RTT floor that match up with the outer channels in the second to the last and second to the front Prinsu cross bars.

The distance between the front to rear channels of the two bars is exactly 31”, so your line of bolts between the front bars to the rear bars has to be 31” apart.

After sliding the carriage bolts into the bar channels, lightly tighten them in place on the RTT floor.

Put the RTT on the rack and tighten up the Prinsu bar screws.

Climb in the RTT and tighten up the floor T-nuts using an allen wrench.

Thats it- the floor will tighten up against the bars, so you have to losen the floor T-nuts first before taking out the Prinsu bars - its a hassle but definitely keeps the RTT secure on the rack!

Note: lining up the carriage bolts on the bars to the floor holes in the RTT is hard, so I just bought two extra bars and leave them mounted on the RTT when storing it. I just swap them with the ones on my Prinsu when I am installing the RTT back on the rack.

I also made a RTT cart to store it and be able to roll it in and out of the garage by using two Harbor Freight furniture dollies bolted to a 4’ piece of wood, then making a side fram to keep the RTT upright on the dollies. Works great!

How has this held up since mounting?

I want to put a smittybuilt rtt on the cab of my '19 6 Spd Off Road. Whether I need brackets, or a cab rack as long as the rtt is secure and no risk of damage from the mount.

 

I have a snugtop camper shell without the added reinforcement such as the outdoorsman option. Do you think with a good quality rack it will still be able to support a RTT, or is it any safer to mount the RTT above the main cabin?

 

Most shells can handle a RTT no problem just get the mounts needed.

I personally want to keep my bed cover setup and do the RTT on the cab for a year while I get something like a gofastcamper/alucab ordered for next year. Having the tent up high when camping will be really neat I think and for daily driving I will maybe take it on and off when I want.

 

What bed cover setup do you have now? Which mounts are you using?

 

Note: 5-years later and the setup is still working great with the same tent- we use the tent two weeks a year or so and I leave it on a lot…
