How has poking a mountain lion with a stick worked out?
    "Bad kitty, back, down" <chomp>
My ROE are if the mountain lion is withing 50 feet and not leaving I will engage mr kitty with my weapon and hope I'm quick enough.
    I like your thread.

You don't give yourself enough credit, your photos are nice. The photographer takes pictures not the camera.

I went through Deception Pass once with my boss at the time on a 36 foot sailboat, under sail. I didn't think it was the best plan but he was the boss and he signed for the boat. We had the engine running and a big knife to cut the main sheet if we got into big trouble. Great sport!

Jumping ahead (I’ll post older travel stuff as I get around to them). Did an overnight backpack trip here in Zion this week. Weather warnings of 30mph sustained winds and gusts to 60mph... humph. What could go wrong??

Trip was great. 10 miles in, 10 out on the same trail.

Entered at East Rim TH, then headed out to Deertrap Mtn. Got to the rim of Zion Cyn, saw the view then retreated a mile or so. (I tried pitching the tent there but the wind reports were correct. Within minutes, the inside of the tent looked like a beach there was so much sand...)

Found a decent site in some trees. Winds howled all night. And though lessened, still gusty in the morning for the walk out.

(Photos coming in a second, changing devices for easier upload)

Another day of exploring. This time we headed out to Pine Valley Mtn.

PVM is just off the southwestern edge of the Colorado Plateau. Originally formed from lava that never extruded, it became a laccolithic mountain made of granite. An odd find in an area surrounded in sandstone.

The major peaks top out at just over 10k feet. (There was snow up high yesterday)
The eastern slope has a couple FS roads and trailheads, a few smal feeder creeks. Their western slope is home to the community of Pine Valley, pop. 200+/- and the Pine FS Valley Rec Area.

We don’t do much campground camping, but this place is laid out extremely well. I would recommend it!
