I noticed about 6 months ago that when my truck is sitting there idling there is a whirring sound. It's obviously the clutch. When I depress the clutch pedal the noise stops about half way down. I've checked the adjustment and there is about 1-2" of play before the clutch engages so I don't think the TOB is making noise because the clutch is out of adjustment.

It's not a bad noise and it is not a grinding noise. It's not very loud either. It's just there. What do I have to worry about? The truck is a 2004 RC Tacoma with the 2.7 and 4X4. Am I looking at a TOB replacement in the future and how long have I got?

I think it's the transmission, not the clutch. In neutral with the clutch pedal out parts of the transmission still spin and make a noise. Pressing on the clutch makes the spinning stop, so the noise stops. Perfectly fine.

Agreed. Most likely the transmissions input shaft bearing making some noise. The Aisin R series transmissions are know to make some noise, even when new.

Thanks, that's good news. I won't worry about it then.

I would at the least check the fluid level in the transmission and transfer case just to be sure.

Sounds like throw out bearing. If your under warranty and can get the noise to do it at the dealership they should replace it. Good time to consider buying a new clutch if you need it cause they gotta drop the tranny to do the job anyways.

    It's a 2004. It's probably out of warranty.

I have a 98 with the 5 speed, V6. I had the R150 completely rebuilt. new Bearing and synchros. Also a new input shaft, TOB as well. Ne flywheel and Marlin Crawler Clutch kit.

Makes that same exact noise. I will be sitting there in the bank drive-thu and when in neutral it makes that noise. Depress clutch and it goes away. Even took it back to the verteran transmission shop guy who did all the work. Said "it must be gear wine". lol It's not getting worse or causing any issues. I just think these things are noisy IMO.

I'm not sure about a whirring noise but I have the dreaded TOB chirp and it sounds like a 100 angry chirping crickets when I'm idling or coasting, as soon as I press the clutch or accelerate it goes away. I've dealt with it on 2 clutches now, it's just one of those annoying Toyota manual transmission quirks I guess.

Same thing here. Installed a rebuilt Marlin R150F this spring. Made the noise with the old transmission, makes the noise with the new/rebuilt unit.

So that means it's normal! lol I've taken numerous road trips and nothing bad has happened. Just makes all those old pickup noises I guess!

Yeah, my noise is "just there". No chirping, no grinding. You can just hear something spinning and it's not loud at all. Based on all the posts it seems to be normal. I won't worry about it unless something stops working or I hear grinding or something really weird.

That would be a good guess since it's 14 years old.

That's a good idea. I'll do that this weekend just to make sure.

Have you guys adjusted the clutch pedal for proper free play? I remedied this issue by doing so.

I checked mine because I know the free-play is important. I've got plenty. About an inch or 2.
