Busy trying to mod and build a truck that I will enjoy and use for years to come and noticed recently my differential is seeping. Its a 2017 trd sport with mt tranny- I looked at the TSB bulletin and mine is not included in the recall nor the recall for the howling diff. Which I believe I experience as well. Will any Toyota dealership honor the work even if I purchased the truck from a dealership about 5 hours away? They were the ones who had the setup I was after and gave me a really good trade in on my 2011 Tundra- I called the closest dealership (45 miles away) and asked them and they said to bring it in and they could look. (Just over 10000 on the odometer)

Toyota is Toyota. Doesnt matter which dealership you bought it from. They get paid all the same by warranty work.

Had the same issue on my 2016. Save your self the hassle and just torque the bolts yourself. Mine went away after a few more lbs.

PS. also do the diff breather extender mod while your down there.

my 2016 sport had the same, I re-torqued all bolts and a couple weeks
later it was right back again. took it in, they replaced the seal & the bolts
and it's been many months now, no sign of it returning.

They will fix it. I wasn’t one recall either  Mine was gone for a month and I had a rental the whole time. It was dripping and was much worse than that so be glad yours isn’t too bad.

Honest question: Is that really a leak? Mine looks like that. I'd call it seepage and nothing to worry about at this point?

Also, when I did my diff fluid swap and then the breather mod a week later, I found that there was a pretty good vacuum in the diff. I think the breather was not working. I tested the new breather. I was able to get flow in both directions easily.

Let Toyota do it- free diff oil change and 10K miles less on your new diff gasket. Once you retighten a leaking gasket, the better chance it will happen again through the same areas wetted by oil.

36k miles later no issues. Sadly since its wasn't in the recall they probably wont do anything besides just tighten the bolts beyond spec.

Ah  then you will be dealing with sheared off bolt heads later down the road if they ever retighten it... terrible.

Ha it will take more than 2-3 ft-lbs over spec to strip threads. Why would the dealer touch your diff bolts unless you said something? If they set their torque wrench to the spec torque it will just pop before the bolts even met the current preload. This isn't rocket science, people need stop relying on the dealership to fix every little thing. I just suggest a possible fix rather relying on a guy that makes minimal wage that gives a rats a$$ about your vehicle bc at the end of the day the dealership is losing money even touching your truck.

“This isn’t rocket science” is funny since I grew up in a aerospace family - one mantra I grew up with was “replace the gasket, once you tighten it it is done”. Still follow it today.
My old dial-type clicker I inherited from my dad goes down to fractions of a ft/pound, but I still dont retighten fiber gaskets, just the metal layered ones that are designed to crush and form themselves between the parts.

If it's under warranty, DO NOT get under it and try anything yourself. Make them fix it. Any dealer will do it. According to the TSB, re-torque is only if it is NOT leaking, weeping, seeping.

Your warranty is with Toyota, not with a specific dealership. Any dealership would fix that under warranty.
