Nail clipping

Anybody ever clip your dogs toe nails? I tried to do my pup last evening and you’d swear Satan jumped on him. I got one nail clipped and he pulled his paw back and jumped around like a banshee running around the living room like his tail was on fire. I laughed so hard I was crying. I know I didn’t get back too far I’ve done it before. I guess I’ll have to take him to the groomer now lol

 

My pup does the same thing! Simon hates his nails clipped.

 

I used to have 120lb lab lap dog. She hated the shear style clippers. So I tried the pettypaws thing and it was better. Problem was her nails were just too large and thick for that. I ended up using a dremel and a sanding drum. I would just use it maybe half speed and she would lay there and let me trim the nails. Overall I think it was easier on her. The shear pinches the nail into and I could see that hurting even if you didn't cut too far up. Plus the dremel does not leave a sharp edge. Just a thought. Crazy maybe but it worked and she was happy.

 

Helps to shine a light through the nail to see how far you can cut before hurting them. And give many treats!

 

We used to cut our pup's nails until my wife accidentally cut back a bit much, thanks to a struggling pup, and her paw bled all over the kitchen floor. Now we take her her the vet every few weeks. Best $20 I spend and takes about 5 minutes.

 

I used to cut my labs nails but I cut back too far one time and he bled pretty good. I googled to see what to do and found that if you mix flour and water together to make a paste put it on it. It stopped The bleeding pretty fast

 

We tried that also and ended up making a pasty mess everywhere, but it did help a little bit.

 

Are you sure you didn't clip the dogs quick? I've done that a few times to my dogs and it hurts them a lot which is why he might of been running around.

I clip my dogs nails (all 5 of them) weekly. I use the clippers to get the bulk of the nail off then a nail dremel to grind down the nail. After while I just use the dremel to keep them maintained for the most part.

We use the same thing on my 2 labs. And my 2 previous labs. Tried clipping the previous labs nails but that was a fight, burnt up 2 petty paws and now have a black and decker similar to a Dremel. My black lab I lost a couple years ago was the kindest, most gentle ole soul until you tried to do his nails, even with the petty paws

My 2 current labs don’t mind it too much, the female is just hyper and doesn’t like to hold still. While the male can be entertained with a bunch of treats

 

Our vet gave us a sedative. I hate giving it to him. His eyes get all glassy and he can barely walk, but it’s the only way he’ll let us clip.

 

I have a grinder that runs on C cell batteries, I use on my Dog he will sit still for the fronts but he gets a little wiggly when I do his hind feet. I do not know the name brand but I got it at Pet Smart on sale for $20.

 

My dogs all have hated it when I try to clip them myself. Thankfully I found a local groomer that only charges $5 and can clip them all faster than I can clip two nails.

 

Another cordless dremel user here.

 

I use this one from chinamart, works great and has a light in the end. Use the middle speed to keep it quieter.

My dog used to go ape shit when I would try to do his nails. I then started just grabbing his paws and massaging them so he would get used me holding his paws. After doing this regularly I would sneak in a pair of shears and do a paw and he didn’t even notice. Now he’s fine with the trimming.
