I just cleaned mine at 122k and it was really black. After cleaning it I had CEL on but a quick reset and it was fine. I definitely noticed a smoother drive. I took throttle body off to do it. Much easier. I didn't do the MAF as I didn't have any cleaner

Cleaned my TB last week. Over 90k, and it didn't look nearly as dirty as some of you with half of that mileage.

Great write up. I do this one about every 60,000. Sometimes it is super dirty other times not.

A little something every chance we get.
Just added this to my to do restoration list for Little Big Red. Was going in for plugs this week, and I know I already have the throttle body cleaner somewhere...... AND THAT ARROW! I'm ashamed I have to resort to Power Point, not that I don't have a good photo editor. WELL DONE, my friend!

For spraying the throttle body, you just spray it on the walls right? Not into the engine at all? (Just want to make sure..) also great write up! Going to do this soon.

So, I found something unique to this thread. Pulled my MAF for some much overdue cleaning and got a surprise. This white plastic cylinder popped out and landed there..IMG_20180126_190742.jpg It seems like it would fit in the cylindrical space at the bottom of the sensor, but doesn't stay put. Not seeing it on any other posts, and can't figure out how it would have stayed there over the life of this truck.. 311k kms. I intend to put everything back together sans white piece, but thought I'd put it up for the hive mind to see.
For kicks and comparison, here's my dirty throttle body, and spacer.IMG_20180126_190345.jpgIMG_20180126_190137.jpg
I grabbed a decent shot of the fragile little wires inside the housing that we requires us to remove the MAF to get at too. IMG_20180126_184712.jpgWill post up after a tank or two the resulting mpg increase. Got into this process by mercilessly poor mpg towing my 6x12 tool trailer:IMG_20180120_200323.jpg 6-8mpg increased to 12ish mpg with new spark plugs and some alteration in driving habits that came with more low end power.. The plugs were.. bad... Don't let yours get to this point.. 15170196193762044081333895249829.jpg More than double the spec for spark gap. I'm mostly amazed the trucks been running so well, up until i started pulling 3000lbs up and down steep grades on the daily. But hopefully with a thorough scrubbin' of the area and a quick seafoam bath I can report gains in mileage/power.

apologies for drifting away from topic.. also, thanks to the mods for making this photo adding process so simple, from my smartphone in a freezing northern alberta garage. kudos.

well, figured out where the white spacer came from, now just have to figure out what happened to the second one...IMG_20180126_221500.jpg

Also, it might be worth mentioning, if your TB looks oily as mine pictured above, you should check the intake just before the TB to see whether your getting oil introduced from the crankcase breather hose.IMG_20180126_213521.jpg If this is the case you should be checking your PCV as it is likely clogged, as this should be pulling air into the crankcase, not bringing oil from the crankcase..

Finally got around to doing this yesterday. Tb was pretty dirty on the engine side so I'm happy I did it. Happy for you guys that have noticed a significant difference but for me I really don't notice any difference in performance afterwords.

I admit that I haven't read all of the post so forgive me but, I did this two years ago and it was very dirty. How often does this need to be done? It's been 2 years so about 26k miles, truck seems to run and idle fine.

I did mine during the second spark plug change. Maybe every or every other plug change?

I didn't realize I needed to clean my throttle bottle and just did it today at 166,777 miles and one can imagine how awful it looked. Of note, I didn't change my PCV valve until a few thousand miles ago.

Unfortunately I forgot to take pictures.

I literally couldn’t believe how disgusting it was. I was getting 200 miles per tank and when coming to a stop idle would drop down to 450 or so

    198k miles on that
