HELP: 96 Tacoma Differential Fluid Change - Engine Shaking and Check Engine Light

    I just changed my differential fluid on my front and rear differentials. I also did the transfer case. I replaced all fluids with Amsoil Synthetic Severe Gear
    $30 75w-90 Synthetic Gear Lube - 1 Quart (Pack of 2)
    75w-90.

    I have a 96 Tacoma 2.7 4 cylinder 4WD.

    I drove about 10 miles right after the change and it drove great. Shifted smooth.

    Then I turned the truck off for about 30 minutes. When I came back and tried to drive the truck again, I put it in reverse and it started to shake a little bit, backed out of my drive way and it sputtered. Then I drove forward down the road a couple hundred feet and it continued sputtering slightly. Then the check engine light came on, so I drove back home and turned off the engine.

    What could have happened? I’m nearly positive I put the right amount in each component and I replaced all of the crush washers. Could this coincidentally be something else happening right after the oil change?

    I’m not going to drive the truck. Just going to get it towed to my mechanic and have him take a look.

    Just changing the diff oil shouldn't affect the engine. Hmm

    This is a 96...so there should be a way to read the cel by jumping pins? Might wanna look that up if you wanna get the ball rolling on this.

    Any clue if this is an ODB2 port? It’s the port that’s in the engine compartment (has a small black cap that says diagnostics) as opposed to under the dash.

    You can buy an OBD II reader for 20 bucks or less..i got a decent one (pairs via bluetooth to phone) about a year ago and its been handy.

    Unfortunately I live in Jackson, Wyoming where the cheapest one at Napa is $70. I borrowed one from a friend and figured out that cylinder 2 was misfiring.

    Replaced the spark plugs and wires and its back to running perfectly.
