I’m looking to add the Sony XAV100 or whatever the hell its called soon. I know i can buy the add on that will allow me to retain my volume and skip controls on the left of my steering wheel. I just found a thread in the 1st gen section where guys are adding the Bluetooth call buttons to the right side also. Surely someone has done this in the second gens before

I have that head unit (XAC-AX100) and it works with the controls on my steering wheel... so, not sure what you're basing your information on.

I'm using the PAC SWI-RC and it'll handle both the left-side (volume, station up/down) and right-side controls (phone, voice command). I believe the Axxess ASWC-1 will work as well, but it'll only support the left-side controls.

I’m saying that my truck currently only has the controls on the left side of the steering wheel. It doesn’t have the phone/Bluetooth buttons on the right hand side, they’re blank. I’m asking if I can buy the switch and somehow get them to work in my truck. If it isn’t too too involved at least. I didn’t know if the trucks are wired for it but mine would need a different clock spring and just those switches or what

Ah... got it. Well, you can install the controls for BT/phone control on the right side. If your truck has the left-side controls, then all the wiring is in place, and you just need to buy the other control set and install it. That's what I did on my truck ... pretty simple install.

I got mine off eBay for just under $50 ... looks like they're asking more now. Anyway, search for part number 84244-35030-B0 -- it may show as 4Runner, but it's the same part for the Taco. It has a ribbon cable that routed behind the airbag and connects to the existing left-side controls. Installing requires removal of the airbag from the steering wheel, so you need to be comfortable doing that. It's just a few fasteners then you can lower it out of the way to install the controls... I don't think you need to disconnect it or anything. Anyway, there are detailed guides somewhere on this site.

And this is why I love TW!
Every search I tried kept coming up with steering wheels swaps and 1st gen stuff

So remove the airbag, remove my old filler switch piece, bolt in the new switches, route the cable and connect it to the left side switches. Then when I buy my XAV100 headunit whichever steering wheel control module that crutchfield offers with the install kit should make the hands free buttons work as well as the radio controls?
    Just to be sure

Thank you thank you! I will be ordering that switch this week then. Good to know

Crutchfield supplied the Crux SWRTY-61S unit when I bought my first headunit (a Pioneer, I think). The adapter was universal... worked with various after-market head-units including Sony. It worked fine when I just had the left-side control, but it didn't seem to correctly support the right-side controls ... like, nothing happened when I pressed the buttons. Maybe it was a config issue, but I never figured it out.

After doing a bit of research, I decided to try the PAC unit. The install and setup was a bit more complicated than the CRUX, but I did finally get everything working. The Sony head-unit has a feature where you can customize your control mappings ... a lot like programming a universal remote, very easy to use once you figure it out. Anyway, I ended up using that to map the controls correctly ... just select the feature (e.g., VOL UP) on the Sony and then press the control on the steering wheel you want for it.

Here's another TacomaWorld write-up on the adapters:
    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/how-to-switch-from-crux-swrty-61s-to-pac-swi-rc.477741/

The only downside to the Sony is a safety nag screen every time it powers up ... but, there's a guy who's modified the firmware and has it available to download and install. Firmware updates can be sketchy and there were a few nervous moments as the system rebooted twice during the install, but it ultimately worked.

Yep, already saved that guys file to remove that screen. That would get annoying fast. I’m going to read about the PAC system now

Well, PACs site shows that the SWI-RC will not work with the Sony XA-100. Shows I would need to use the more universal system, the SWI-CP5

Interesting... i don’t entirely agree with that, but I did have to take advantage of some special Sony features. The other unit is probably more plug n play... bet it will be a much smoother install

Yeah it shows that they have presets for each make and model with any brand headunit. You can program it manually with switches on the side or with an app on your phone supposedly.

Quick question here about a 2009 Prerunner:

If I have the left hand volume controls, do I need to buy both the right hand controls and the wire ribbon, or just the right hand controls?

    Thanks
