That time again. Every two years. Truck is clean but I can’t stand the aggravation.

Always the tiniest bit of apprehension.

Same. Although the state I live in does have inspections, my truck is registered in a state 4 moves ago that doesn't require one. Truck hasn't been inspected by some random government licensed idiot since it was new-oddly enough in the same state I am living in now.

Yep... for sure CA is a shit state (I've lived here since 1991). They don't give a shit if any of your safety equipment works, but damn if you emit just a smidgen of smog more than they allow... when the real issue is the stupid factories.

I'll be done raping their state coffers in 6 years... and I'll be taking my military retirement and my county retirement to a state where CA can't touch it. The People's Republic of TAXifornia can suck my ass.

I don't live in CA so I don't feel your pain, but I am old enough to remember what CA was like before smog/emission testing and trust me, you are way better off now. So, I strongly suggest you take a few deep breaths (as you can now without dying), calm down and get in line for the test

Try living in California and owning a diesel. Emissions testing that is based on purely a visual inspection, obd2 connection and part of it is subjective. Full throttle, no load, release throttle and look for black smoke. No actual smog/ emissions check at all. I think the goal is to just blow everyone’s head gaskets so there’s less of them in the road. Ok that’s my rant for the day

The issue then, and now, was the factories. Not the cars.

I do agree the system works. With our population numbers it makes sense. The air down south is not like the old days.

But you miss my point. (Or i sucked at making my point). It’s the aggravation; the tiny nagging anxiety that my car won’t pass. I had. 1981 Porsche. It was an hour of Hand wringing when that car was in the Dyno-rack.

    I have a mental issue.

We just have the OBD test here in Texas. But there are ways around that. When I was a state inspector before I quit doing it my dad had the CEL come on in his tacoma for a cat, not wanting to spend the money at the time I just pulled my tacoma in and ran the OBD test. Easy peasy.

I sure wish!!! If it did I’d either spend it on making my diesel more obnoxious than it already is (2nd gen 5.9 Cummins - factory loud) or just moving out of state. The problem is this whole thing isn’t localized to just california and ultimately the things that I’d be running from will just keep following me as this plague spreads across the country. Same goes with lame ass California gun laws. If I did move, Texas is looking really good but being from California I may not be welcome there?

Only thing worse is having to drive behind one of those soot belching diesel pickups.

What aggravation? I stop by my local smog place on my way home from work. I wait 5 minutes and they take my $30. Done.

What smog place do you use that only charges $30.00????!!!! If I’m not mistaken California regulates the smog fee and it’s at least double that. If someone is only charging what you say please post their name. I promise they will be the most popular smog place first thing tomorrow morning. I pay right around $80.
I do agree that there are some trucks that make just too much smoke but it’s not as often seen here in California but if you really don’t like being behind one then just go around them- I do.
As much as I love and admire old 60’s muscle cars when I get behind one I immediately need to put my ac on recirc or just make the pass. Those things stink way worse than most diesels.

Just don’t act like a cliche California liberal and you will be fine. I would gladly welcome a Tacoma brother to Texas.

I checked my visa statement. It was actually $38 with a coupon, but I use a coupon every time I go there.

I agree with you about old cars. I don't understand why they are not held to a smog standard. Just because the car is old does not mean it should be a gross polluter. If those people can't maintain their engines then they should be taken off the road. Calif air quality is bad enough here. 7 of the 10 smoggiest cities in the USA are in Calif.
