Locked keys in truck

We were at the lake this last weekend and I left my keys in the truck. When I was coming outside to leave, I heard the lock beep and realized the truck had somehow locked itself. Standing there looking through the window at my keys in the cupholder, it continued to cycle the door locks (unfortunately never to unlock), lights flashing and everything. This went on for at least 45 minutes until I was able to fish the keys through a tiny opening in the drivers side window using a coat hanger. Everything appears fine now but it was weird as hell. Thoughts?

I've noticed that if I unlock my truck (2014) with the key fob that the truck locks after about 30 seconds if I don't open any of the doors. You would think that there would be some kind of sensor in the fob so the truck doesn't lock if the keys are inside of the truck.

 

How about not leaving the keys in the truck? Or you could go get a 1 dollar copy of the key made to keep in your wallet or hide under the truck somewhere just to unlock the door

First thing I do with every vehicle I've ever owned.

 

I had this happen to me. It's a "safety feature". You have to make sure you use the door panel to unlock your door if you don't want it to re-lock. You can't use the key fob.

I have to leave keys in my car so it can be moved on construction sites. I now leave them in the gas cap.

 

Our '12 4 runner will not lock with fob inside, just beeps like crazy until you open the door.

Thanks, this was the answer is was looking for. Wanted to make sure there wasn't something else going on, it was like the truck was possessed! For some reason I didn't think it was possible to lock the keys inside, the the 4-runner.

 

When I’m home I always leave my keys in the truck (ignition). I’ve never had this happen to me.

Sounds odd. I know the doors relock if you don’t open the doors within so many seconds of unlocking them with the fob.

I’m thinking the truck is haunted. Sounds odd.

Was there anything resting on the keys so maybe the button was getting pushed?

Same here, my wife's car also has a hidden key since about 2 times a year she locks her keys in her car,saves me having too go get her everytime.

 

Yup, its a safety feature, if you unlock the doors with the keyfob but do not open a door, it will relock in 30seconds.

You can not lock the doors with the keys in the ignition and the truck off they will instantly unlock.



But yes, go get a standard metal key copied and hide it somewhere on the truck. This will get you in the door (but not be able to start the truck). I have a hidden standard metal key on my truck, then my second chipped key is hidden very well within the cab of the truck so in the event i fully loose my keys i can still get home.

I never locked the truck when I got out. Threw keys in cupholder and ran inside to change, took maybe ten minutes. As I'm walking down the stairs, I heard the truck beep and went "oh shit". Was certain someone was messing with me.
I know I've been in this same scenario before and it's never happened. I do it all the time in my driveway if I running inside for a few minutes.
I know there was nothing resting on them because I could see them.

 

I had hit my door panel lock and as soon as I shut my door, I realized the keys were in the cupholder. Had to get the little airbag and long wire to push the unlock button. It took a couple of hours all total. Went to locksmith and had door lock only key made and hide it on the truck where I can get to it. On all my old trucks 60's thru 90's ALWAYS had coat hanger under the bed mat as I had a bad habit of leaving keys in the truck.

 

It's funny how it specifically states "not for use on vehicles" in the description, but the majority of the reviews I skimmed are people using it for their vehicles

 

I worry about doing the same thing. The key fob for my '09 is separate from the key, so I keep it attached to a separate key ring so i have a way to unlock the door if the key is locked inside.

 

I locked mine a while back. A note for those in the future, a slim Jim doesn't work in out trucks. Also, some say they can pry and slide the back sliding window, but mine wouldn't slide open. Airbag and rod popped the lock.

Also, I went and had a key made at ACE hardware. He said he couldn't get one with a chip because it's some sort of super chip he can't replicate. However, my dummy plain metal key starts the ignition fine. Idk if it is because I have a base model or what...
