Thank you Bill! Good to know. As I'm sure you're well aware now the difference is the housings, in particular I believe just the ABS sensor, since you end up replacing the whole housing with the bearings. Glad you found it useful.

Out of a 2000 Tundra. Quite a different animal indeed. The bearings even sit there and slide up in down in the housings which is real weird but supposedly normal as there is a lip they snug down against inside the axle tubing. That probably won't make sense unless you've played with one in person. Much cheaper to service but I like ours better. There is only one ball bearing as opposed to two in ours as well.

I realize this is an old thread, but thank you for the write-up, as it helped me immensely in doing this myself. I just picked up my parts for this job, and thought I'd share the part numbers I ordered from Toyota as I had a difficult time finding part numbers online without physically going to Toyota.

I found the Koyo bearing assembly from a place called Euro Port Parts for $86 shipped - heck of a deal considering Toyota was over $400 and as far as I know the OEM part uses a Koyo bearing as well. As for the rest of the parts I picked up at the dealership, I purchased the following parts:

    Rear axle shaft oil seal
    O-ring
    Rear axle shaft snap ring
    Rear axle bearing retainer
    Rear axle shaft conical washer

    These were for a 2008 Tacoma 4x4.

I hope that helps someone looking at doing this job. I had a local driveline shop do the press work - they only charged me $45. The entire job with press work ran about $180.

180$ is pretty cheap compared to having it done by someone else!

Also, years later I now have done a few more toyota bearings.Theres definitely no measurement on this. The Tundra did have a measurement but it is widely known that they’re a problem child, to the point that some do mods to get the seal to ride correctly on the collar. However, not all older Toyotas are like that. Just press the collar down until to you can intall c clip. And at this point I’d probably re-use everything but the bearing and seal.

Going to order some parts for my project truck build that I'm using a 2nd gen rear axle for and I'll be paying for the press time; worth it for me, but I'd like to buy the parts to save money. Any part numbers for Timken or National bearings or should the Koyo's from Napa be alright?

Just to clarify the only parts I should need to order are the axle seal to press into the ends of the housing and a new bearing for each side - nothing else?

And when you say bearing, do you mean the whole unit here

    https://www.napaonline.com/en/p/BRGBR930401

or just the Koyo part number you posted in the OP - I couldn't find just the bearing from the part number :notsure:

Anybody know the diameter of the axle shaft? I'm getting ready to do my 2010 prerunner and I'm going to make the press tool. I have a piece of pipe, just not sure if it has a big enough diameter.

I don't think it'll matter down past the bearing.
What's the od down to that point?

The shaft diameter is 1.32" down to where it flares out to the snap ring at 1.74"

Do you have the part# for the studs and nuts that bolt it to the axle housing?

Can anyone tell me if all the second generation rear axles are interchangable? Not the complete differential... just the axles?

I need to replace the left side axle on a 2012 Baja Edition w/ traction control.

Also, the light is on and it won't go out after the differential was hit hard. Ideas?
