No winch needed. All paved and/or gravel roads (as far as I know). Trying to make this one more of road trip than an overlanding trip. Although that would be awesome it is just so hard to setup around here with everyone so uptight about land usage

Correct. As far as I know almost anything can make this trip but the road going to the SP in VT looks to be a little rough but still a gravel road. I wouldn't take my wifes new Camry but I would if I had an Subie Outback or something

External antenna, mic, and 12v pluger iner thing all for $25. So for $50 total you could have a sweet HAM setup if you just mount it somewhere

I have one, but we were just doing handheld to handheld. It made it easy to get out and spot and still use the radio, as opposed to yelling. I’m gonna see if I can get a longer antenna for the handheld to help out range a little

 

Add the programing cable and you can program it with the free CHIRP software.

I hooked my baofeng up to an external antenna off the back of the truck and ran it that way for a while with good results.

Don’t wanna be a Debbie downer here. But, you guys need to be HAM licensed in order to transmit from HAM radios. Unless it’s an emergency. You can listen all you want, but not transmit. FCC requirement.

If I knowingly comm with any non-licensed person on a HAM frequency, my technician’s license could be revoked.

That is partly correct. You DO NOT need a license to transmit over MURS (Multi use radio Service) as long as you use a MURS frequency you're perfectly legal and fine. Most guys use BLUE DOT (154.570 MHz)

range really depends on the antenna, not the frequency or the wattage. It should be fine.
