I have a 2008 4cyl 5spd 4x4 access cab tacoma with steel wheels. I picked up a set of 2017 TRD offroad alloy rims,

(see pic of what they look like here: https://twstatic.net/attachments/2017trdoffroadwheel-jpg.1331000/ *not my pic, just online link to pic).

When I was trying to have them installed at a tire shop I was told the don't fit because of "curvature" . . I assume backspace? I was told to purchase wheel spacers to address the issue. After some online looking and some phone calls to a few tire shops it seems maybe "hub rings" are what I am seeking?

If anyone could help me out and provide a link to what I need to purchase to get these wheels on my truck I would be super super grateful.

BTW, Safety is a key issue for me (daily commuter vehicle, occasionally drive on forest roads, but no crazy off-roading for me . . . damaged too many vehicles in the past), so any thoughts on safety and pros/cons would be greatly appreciated

Do you have the lug nuts that are for the aluminum wheels? They take a different lug nut than the steel wheels.

What size of tires are you installing? The backspacing should be similar to your steel wheels. If anything it may be a little less. I can't think of any other reason why they won't fit.

they said something about the hub on my 2008 was concave or curved which caused the wheel not to sit right. I assumed the hubs on the 2017 were flat allowing flush mounting.

I have the same truck as you, but a 2010 model year and those exact wheels went on my truck no problem, both with stock tires and then larger 33’s when I upgraded. Maybe try another shop?
