Thank you so much!! I really appreciate you taking the time to give an in-depth explanation. Do you run or recommend running a temp gauge for the transmission? I keep hearing that you only need to on autos but, sometime when driving from UT to ID my stick (literally the stick under the ball) shift will get kinda hot. I do have a six speed with a TRD quick shift.

Side note, I didin't even fathom that kind of gas mileage was remotely possible with 40s. I'm over here worrying about the mileage of my E rated 265/75/r16.

Ew, just avoid OK all together and make the drive through Texas if you have not been through East Texas. I-20 east of DFW is pretty good as far as roads go.

I have done the "49 min faster" drive before going to NM twice and it is a nice drive in that part of Texas.

I will agree with this 100%. There is also a legit beer gas station right off 20 in Arlington to pick up some local flavors of craft beer.

    @Nateclimb :thumbsup:

You could figure out a way to monitor a manual transmission fluid temperature but because there is no external or high-pressure pump mechanism it would be difficult to determine how much heat is generated from the transmission versus heat soak from the engine and ambient air around the exhaust pushing against your drivetrain.

I am on avid MR2 enthusiast and have installed a Lotus Exigue 6-spd transaxle into my first gen MR2. Third gear becomes a problem north of around 280 HP where I am just about at now. What many of the Lotus guys have done, is they have installed AN Hose fittings to both the drain plug and fill plug and connect the circuit through an external cooler and external pump. The problem they are having is finding an electric pump that can hold up to high fluid temperatures.

Toyota has made manual transmissions with internal shaft driven high-pressure pump and external oil coolers, such as the JDM E-series transaxle, so we know if there was a need at the given tow rating they've certified our trucks for then they would have provided a cooler.

If you're worried I'd recommend a good quality synthetic gear oil such as redline MT90 and refresh it every other year :)

@ETXTacoma Holy cow I just now noticed that in my screenshot hahaha, I must have tapped a different route while taking that screen capture. Don't worry, I'm staying in Texas baby!!

Here is the proper route :D

    IMG_3136.jpg

I am currently about 20 minutes west of Armarillo. This stretch from Albuquerque was, well, pretty boring. I must've driven for weeks with the same view. I tried to take a panorama, I guess it turned out OK ha ha

You guys have a nice impressive wind farm of your own out here. I'm looking at timestamps and it took 29 minutes since my first photo to finally pass the last turbine. That's got to be more than a 25 mile stretch!

You ought to detour through Paris, Tx, not too far outta the way (hour 1/2) Its got an Eiffel tower with red cowboy hat - It makes for a great photo op! Maybe on your way home...

I'll meet up with ya for sure. I'll be at "beer camp" more than the trails

Thanks for the suggestion on the Eiffel Tower. I've got four or five stops in the Dallas area tomorrow morning for business relations before heading to Barnwell. Paris will be about an hour and a half out of my way, which isn't bad, I'll just have to see how it goes. Sounds fun so hopefully I can do it :)

Stopped for my next to last fill up and took some time looking things over. Everything is doing great.

The truck is driving so smooth I actually forgot about my new prototype heavy-duty IFS MarRack steering system. Of course by now the world's strongest street-legal Tacoma IFS steering system has more than proved itself roadworthy.

    IMG_3141.jpg

ps. The MarRack has already survived multiple, repeated large loads in triple-low first-gear 580:1 at full steering lock, air locker engaged, and my 40 inch tires at four PSI. And the improvements I've done to the steering ratio made 40" @ 4 PSI easier to steer in the rocks than my former 37" @ 5 PSI + stock rack. It is truly going to become the defacto rock crawling IFS steering set up. It freak'n blows the doors off anything else out there. I'll be posting video about it to my build thread hopefully within a week!

Speaking about the MarRack, this thing happened to pass me not too long ago. Maybe I'll find a Raptor at the park this weekend. I'd love to see first-hand just how small and wimpy their steering is compared to our new prototype Marlin Crawler system.

Not sure the odds will be to good to see a raptor at the park. Maybe a vendor will be driving one?

I stopped for a bathroom break at a Love's Truck Stop in Quanah, TX, and when I came out these two super cool guys came over to meet me and to ask about the Tacoma. They were very nice and asked good questions so I fired up the truck, shifted into triple low range first-gear, hopped out, closed the door and let the truck idle on its own with no driver incredibly slow right up the curb.

I did this a few times, idling back down on its own in reverse (which is 494:1) and back up again, which caught the attention of two other really nice guys who walked over to see what it was about.

One guy asked if this was the new "Crawl Control" system and I said, "oh no, Crawl Control is a gimmick and this is the real-deal, many, many times better than Crawl Control."

It was so great to meet these guys and it turns out one of them actually live in Fresno and live only about a mile away from my parents house! They also told me that I40 received so much snow where I just was, that they close the road!! Wow!

To the guy in the aqua shorts, sorry I forgot your name (I haven't chatted with another person in like 48 hrs haha I gotta get my head back in it!), but thanks again to both you guys for coming over to chat and for checking out this thread! You guys even got on the ground to look at our products under my truck which was very cool of you both. :) This forum is highly active so feel free to create an account, say Hi, as this place will have everything you've ever wanted to know about Tacoma's!

Lastly, please tell your wife thank you for taking the photo of us, and if she's not your wife then she should be cuz any chick who'd hang out, listen, and take a photo for a complete stranger is awesome in my book!

Icon Suspension has their Raptor with them as they are going to the Texas Raptor Run after Jambo. So there will be a raptor there at least...

Blew me away how friendly people in Texas were when the wife and I first came out here. It was almost annoying! Used to it now and wouldn’t have it any other way. When I go home to visit my family in the Monterey area it annoys me how rude people are....makes you want to throat punch someone.

Update! I've made it safely to my friend's house north of DFW. Arrived just past 11pm. That lightening storm was amazing and beautiful! (But sad for those it caused destruction to).

I entered directly into a red tornado warning zone

    IMG_3164.PNG.jpg

The nicest thing in terms of my commute was that I could tell I wasn't in cen & so-cal: No one freaked out and ppl maintained the posted speed limit. (Where I'm from everyone freaks out and pretty much drives 20 below the limit when we have a 1/2" rain storm.)

Last fill up was in some random deserted road-side station. Doors locked, pump lights turned off. Not sure why I chose to stop there but I got filled up & ready for another 390ish miles

    IMG_3168.jpg

And finally here I am parked for the night just north-west of Dallas

    IMG_3174.jpg

Fuel mileage has dropped from the storm and all this crazy speed up to 65, slow down to 35, speed up to 65, back to 35....speed up, or now there's construction, slow down.... so many small towns along the 287 to slow you down... and instead of on/off-ramps this freeway has blinking yellow caution lights for what look like driveways to a house as entrances and exits of a 65 MPH roadway. Good thing I'm not in a carbureted 4cyl pickup

Austin! Dude how cool is this?! Haha Love your profile pic. Nice, thanks for the invite! I'll see how tired I'll be after the weekend and will let ya know

It's both a shame (why not a Tacoma or 4R?) and good for me. Thanks!

It's almost 1am here so good night all!

Um, whoops, I meant to say, Good night ya'll!

What town did you stay in last night? Im north of DFW, could have gotten an early access sneak peak of this beast!

And yes storms just started last night. I have been keeping my eye on the weather all week.
