Acceptable amount of thread to stud engagement

Okay, how many threads on lug nuts is acceptable clamping? I have 6 1/4 full turns on the lug nuts. The studs could surely be longer and I'd feel better, but is it really necessary?

 

I learned the amount it thread should be at least as much as the bolt is across? Does that make sense?

 

Note: Since the thickness of an alloy wheel can differ from Original Equipment wheels, also verify that the lug nuts or bolts will engage the threads. Refer to the chart (at right) to determine the number of turns or the depth of engagement typical for your stud or bolt size.




that's from Tire Rack. usually for open ended I like to see the entire bolt occupied by thread, ex. the stud comes all the way through the bolt.

 

I put longer studs in my 96 4X4 front and rear... really easy to do. The fronts required a little shortening of the new longer stud, maybe 3 threads to get it to feed into the old stud location. I "feel" safer now knowing that I have more than 4 or 5 threads holding on my front wheels.
