Bug Non Stick Coating

My taco is my first white vehicle I've owned....that coupled with the fact that the front of a tacoma blasts through the air like the flat side of a frying pan results in lots of bugs really stuck on the front bumper/grill area. With the white, even more visible.

I'm wondering if anyone has any product suggestions to put on the front of the truck as a coating to prevent the bugs from sticking so much. I've seen people put rain-x on vehicle fronts before, but pretty sure there are better products to be had. I used to use a honda brand spray on my motorcyle years back....worked wonders keeping the front clean. It left a really smooth, almost greasy feel to the front. Bugs would hit, but really wouldn't stick. If they did stick, a damp cloth would take them right off.

Anyone have a recommendation for a non-stick-like coating to put on the front of the truck.....or if cost effective, the entire truck??

 

I wax with Mother’s Caranuba and clean off dead bugs with Mother’s instant detailer.

 

I've used PAM kitchen spray on my snowblower plenty of times to grease the chute. Not sure if it will have the same result with bugs on a truck.

 

That would probably work wonders........probably would also cause all the dust and dirt to stick right to the front though. Haha...love it!

Correct me if wrong, but caranuba is mostly for the darker colors? Go with synthetic wax like Mequiar"s Ultimate. You can apply that on all your exterior plastic as well. Not really a wax, but more of a sealant.

 

Paint protection is great for protecting your paint. But then put a sealant over it, or better yet, ceramic coat the film.

 

Have you personally used that product or just word of mouth? If you have personally used it....questions:

1) Colorless? Fine to put on white?
2) Ok to put on plastic too?
3) 1 bottle enough for the whole truck?
4) how long does a coating last/how often do you have to reapply?

 

Any color vehicle is fine.

Depends on vehicle use but don’t expect more than a month for this kind of product.

Any properly applied, wax, sealant or coating is going to help protect and help making cleaning the vehicle much easier.

 

i've had two vehicles ceramic coated. sometimes, certain acidic soaps can break down the ceramic unevenly. making it repel water inconsistently and will not be warrantied. almost makes it more work to take care of vs traditional sealants and waxes.

ceramic coating still scratches. advertising will say that's good since you're not scratching your clear coat. the bad is it's harder to repair ceramic coating vs the clear (and it's permanently bonded to the clear so basically what have you gained). you can either get ceramic re-loaders but they only last a month depending on weather, or reapply the ceramic and you really need that done professionally to make sure the repair holds and is even.

consumer ceramics maybe last a year but are still dependent on what their exposed to. professionally installed and heat bonded ceramics maybe 3 years. will wear unevenly, and cannot be removed unless sanded off.

i typically have a professional do a full paint correction. once that's done, use a sealant like adams or colonite.

Do your colonite twice a year and you're set. You can also add a filler of gel coat before applying the colonite or sealant to fill any scratches and add depth. any wax/polish etc and even some coatings have fillers that wear off. You apply it thinking you've fixed all your swirls but you're just filling them. after a few washes or rains, that filler desolves leaving you with your swirls. hence putting the sealant on top.

this is an example of a filler. as stated it won't last long unless something is put on top of it.

 

Turtle wax Ice, wax, and Ice detailer spray works great. Bugs don't stick, they wipe right off with micro fiber.

 

I know you're looking for a coating before the bugs hit, but this works great to get them off. Cheap too.

To those recommending Caranuba, well that is like using AOL dialup to get on the internet.

 

carnuba has nothing to do with color. Some companies might add pigment in their waxes for colors or to try to fill in light swirls but its either carnuba wax or synthetic sealants. Generally carnubas have a "warmer" look to them while sealants last a lot longer. I get about 4-6 months out of mine before all beading is gone. I use menzerna powerlock.

 

Not really, you can use both carnuba on top of sealant if you want for a little more pop.
