I thought about this a bit - because really it's just a slightly smaller than regular pickup and it has Toyota logos. They (pickups in general) all have 4WD and different trim and power levels. They all have a similar audio packages/connectivity. Towing packages. Locker diffs, Etc, etc, etc.

So, it's the little things -

    - It has an electric heater so when it's super cold there is heat before the engine warms up.
    - It has heated mirrors so they don't get all out of whack from cleaning them with a scraper.
    - It ('17) was still offered with a manual and a six cylinder and it's a slick shifting one at that.
    - There is decent storage under and behind the rear seats.
    - The soft-open tailgate makes me smile and not smash my elbows when I'm opening it with an armful of stuff.
    - The bed light can be turned on while driving to let back seat passengers see if stuff is still in the bed :)
    - There are little hooks for grocery bags when the seat is folded down so they aren't flying around the back.
    - There is a 12v socket in the console and wire pathways under the lid so you can keep it closed and power a laptop from an inverter.

There are probably a few more too.

interior looks nice, power is nearly identical to the taco but
I just can't get past that exterior, it's hideous but it's better than
    the last gen.

It's the perfect size truck for me! The towing and payload numbers are enough to do what I want a truck to do. The fuel mileage is good enough that I don't cry too often at the pump. I wanted a full 5 seats and a long bed without having a crazy long wheelbase for city driving and maintain a reasonable breakover angle for offroading. The tacoma DCLB wheelbase is at 140" which is on par with full size offroaders like the RAM rebel. The tacoma is narrower than a full size which helps me on trails as well as parking in tight spots. The back seat is just big enough to not make passengers complain and I get a 6'2" bed...which is perfect for sleeping in under my cap since I am 6'2". Happy owner right here!

Love the sliding rear window (always wanted a 4Runner, just for this).
Love the over all look of the truck. I find myself looking at it every time I walk away and sometimes out my window before I go to bed.

I always wanted a Taco but for some reason or another bought hatchbacks or wagons. As a first time truck owner, I don't think I could have made a better choice (my wife would disagree, she wanted a full size for the extra room.)
