I seem to remember someone trying this before and he wasn't able to set the engine low enough in the frame to clear the cab cause the frame was just too narrow.

Well moving forward. Today I jacked up the 2x4 cab.
I pulled out the 2x4 frame with a tow strap. rolled the 4x4 frame under.
and lowered it back down.It almost looks like a truck again. I still have the 4.0 but it needs a special oil pan or the truck needs a strait axle that I do not yet have. I have recently reacquired the original engine not that it even left my possession. It would be really simple to make it run with the 4 banger.

You know, what ever makes you happy. Would be interesting to see what really is needed for a 4.0 to fit in a 1st gen but its your truck.

I know that the 4.7 and the 4.0 were options in the 2005 and 2006 tundras. I was able to put a 4.7 from a tundra in a first gen frame. I looked online and there is two different oil pans for the 4.0. I do not think toyota had a different frame for the tundra to use the 4.0. If I were able to get the oil pan parts for a 4.0 from a 05 06 tundra, I think I could make it work with the ifs. It is kind of a long shot. The easy way would be to get a strait axle. I have a t100 trans (a340f) with a passenger drive shaft, so any toyota strait axle would work. I haven't found one yet. So while I wait, I'm just putting something together. I got to get this stuff out of my garage.
Today I installed the brake booster, steering shaft, the struts, and set the 2.7 engine in.
The little rubber that the steering shaft goes through at the firewall was worn out. I was able to use the one from the 2006 tundra. They were the same. Here is a photo of them already swapped out.
Here is the 2.7 right back were it was to begin with. Almost looks like a truck again. Too bad I didn't have a blue door. I could put stars and stripes on it and fly it around.

 

I sold the wheels! had to go to another set of bald rollers. They happen to be the same shoes I brought it home in. Seems like I tear this thing apart a lot. I took the manual hubs off of it 2xs for prerunner conversions and now I am going to steel this set to put on my 2nd gen. That means I will have to put auto hubs on it.

 

It looks good with those wheels.

 

I am working on disassembling the steer knuckles from a 4x4 swap. They already have the hubs pressed out. I took the 06 tundra steer knuckles out of the parts house. They are almost the same as the taco. The lower ball joint bolts are larger on the tundra and also machined a little wider. Here they are.

 

I kinda though the same thing when I helped my bro install his TRD suspension on his 2nd gen tacoma. Similar.

 

The stud on the upper ball joint of the tundra is a larger diameter also. I did try to use them to make a half ass roller of it before I got the 3rd set of lockout steer knuckles. I did not work.

 

The 2x4 frame was rusting up good, so It had to go. It is not really gone yet. It did transform into a smaller pile.
I got a little lost in the transmissions. I had swapped the bell housing and pan onto a t 100 trans. I was going to use it, but the output shaft is a different length. Here is the original trans with the correct shaft.

 

Well today was a good day. I have had paid to have press work done to replace 6 front wheel bearings before now. (NO MORE), I say. I have successfully completed the job my self. With the help of a an old friend, use of his 20 ton shop press with plates made the work possible.
These are the steer knuckles without abs I used. Before I worked on these I pressed out the hubs on the 06 tundra steer knuckles.
First I had to press out the old bearing. It took longer for set up. Trying to figure out what to use took some time. Once I got it in there square, it was easy. Below is the giant bearing separator that made it all possible. If I had one, I may have gotten farther at home. I do not really know why, but I did use a tape measure to be sure the bearing separator was square.I did not spend too much time cleaning or prep work on the knuckle. Wiped it out and gave it a little lube and went for it. I just used the plates that were available. Look scary, I know. It went strait down. Some jarring sounds came from it. When I got the bearing flush, I used the old bearing to inset the new bearing into the knuckle.It was not bad at all went right in. I snap ring c clip fit in and then I put on the dust seal. I had to run home and get the backing plates. I almost forgot to put the backing plate on the second one. I also almost forgot to support the bearing at the race. Both of these were reminded to me as my old friend just happened to walk by on separate occurrences. Just my luck, I was saved from ruining the bearings. I really could not believe how his timing saved it. Its all in. Then I had to flip it back over and install the tone ring and retainer. I did not want to dig up the spacer that replaces the tone ring on non-ABS models. You may not see this often (bellow) abs tone ring and not machined for the abs sensor, LOL Here they are. I still have a bit to do to prep them. The hard work is done. The next photo is the 06 tundra knuckles next to the 99 taco knuckles showing difference in lower ball joint mounting service.

 

The transmission, transfer case and front differential are now installed.

 

I had a close call. The t case shift fork was over extended. I was messing with it and I lost the detent ball bearing inside the case. I thought I was going to have to tear it down. I was able to find it at the end of the shift fork at the rear. I got it out and I have decided not to mess with it no more. I also misplaced the heater valve from the fire wall. I had two and one left. I looked everywhere. In the parts trailer, on the shelves, in the bolt bins, and in the back of the truck. I found it on the extra heater core on the top shelf. I remember putting it there so I would not loose it. Ha ha ha. Another thing I lost the other day was my coffee cup. I ended up using my wife's and when I went for the creamer, I found my empty cup in the refrigerator. ha ha ha ha!!!!!

 

The engine is nearly ready to run. I am still playing musical trans oil pans, trying to get the right combo. I have 4 340 auto trans, two 3.4, one 3.0, and one 2.7. All use a different trans pan. The 3.0 pan has the dipstick on the drivers side, so that one is out. I tried to mount the dip stick tube and found it did not line up. The 2.7 dip stick has 2 mounting points. So I guess it is good I haven't added fluid yet. I think I have the correct pan now, but it may have had the tube bent slightly when being removed. I also tried to mount the 3.4 starter. I could figure out why it was fighting me so hard. Man the right one went on easy with out any trouble. I think marking my parts may be a practice I will begin. Well I did not plan on putting this all back together. I do need to hook up the rear wiring to the cab. The 2x4 and 4x4 use different plugs, so I will be repining the plug or swapping the cab harness.

 

I started the truck. As it turns out the plugs at the cab to the rear were the same. I was mixing up the 03 wiring I had. I used the 03 stuff to wire in the fuel pump on the 2x4 99 since I had no wiring for it. I still need to install the rear driveline add fluids, and weld up the exhaust before trying it out again.
