What wheel specs do you need to accomplish this?

If you want no rubbing then don't do what I did.
I have the 4Runner TRD SEMA 17" wheels, Spydertrax 1.25" spacers, and 285/70/17 Nitto Ridge Grapplers. I'm pretty sure adding the spacers did not help me any but I couldn't take them off, they made the tires stick out perfectly for me.

I love the way everything looks but it took a lot to deal with the rubbing. CMC, trimming, hammering the pinch weld. I love the way everything turned out and would do it again but it's not for people on the fence.

    Below are the wheel specs.
    • Wheel Bolt Pattern: 6×139.7mm(5.5″) or 6×5.5
    • TRD 4Runner Wheel Size: 17×7
    • TRD 4Runner Wheel Offset: 4
    • TRD 4Runner Wheel Backspace: 4.5
    • TRD 4Runner Wheel Hub Bore: 106mm

Would the stock trd or wheels give this same effect with the wheel spacers?

What wheel specs prevent rubbing? I’m on fence also, want 285’s but don’t want to trim cut or CMC.

Edit: Keep in mind I have a full OME lift kit. There's no way I would do 285s with no lift.

Not quite. The stock TRD OR wheels have a 25mm offset while the 4Runner Pro wheels I have have a 4mm offset. TRD Sport wheels have 30mm offset. So without the use of spacers the Pro wheels stick out more.

If you add the 1.25" (31.75mm) spacers to TRD OR stock wheels you would essentially have an offset of -6.75 (25 - 31.75) whereas I have currently a -27.75mm offset (4 - 31.75). So to answer your question, you would stick out 0.826 of an inch less with stock TRD OR wheels and spacers, vs my setup.

That extra offset is what caused most of my rubbing, I believe, but as I said before...it was totally worth it.

I ran 265's for a while, than recently switched to 285s. Wish I did it sooner!

I'm thinking about bumping up to the Toyo ATII in 285/70 17. Most days I look at my truck and think it needs bigger tires.

Or you just go 265, don’t do any of that crap and get awesome mpgs. Honestly 255/85 r16 are the best looking IMO, but will require offset or trimming. This is my truck with 265’s

Why will they require offset? They are skinner then 265 and they don't require any thing.

255 my require slight cutting on stock, with a lift, they should not require anything other then VERY minimal trimming

Got the same FN fx wheel and planning 285 soon.

So, No trimming and No CMC?
If so, then die to the 0 offset of the FN fx wheels?
    Whats your lift specs?

275/70/17 - No cutting, no rubbing even off road and I doubt anyone can tell the difference between these and 285 as they are only 1/2" taller/wider.

    This is with OME lift

Offset will sometimes alleviate the need for cutting/trimming due to the tire being farther out from the run area. Also, if you have new UCAs (I have the SPC ones) your turning radius can change a little allowing you to make tighter turns which will make the tire come closer to a rub area on stock wheels

So that’s what the SCS gun metal gray looks like on silver. Looks good!

    Also what lift specs?

Nice truck! Really like the look of those wheels - the silver looks great with blue.
