These mirror risers are causing problems? How long has this been known?

I have the tech package that has the rearview camera in the mirror. Makes it heavier.

Haha I was so embarrassed to start this thread right after posting that I did the riser mod. It seemed a little sketchy to me when I installed it but I had faith. After a 2 hour ride, it was done.

No. Everything came off and went on smoothly. I try to be gentle when things involve glass haha.

I've been fine without it plus I've got a deal blocking the middle of the back window. The backup camera was nice though. But the windshield definitely needs replacement because the mirror took a chunk about half the thickness of the windshield with it. The integrity of the glass has been compromised.

When I 1st saw those mirror risers in marketplace, I thought that was a bad idea. It was obvious to me that the length causing extra leverage could be bad. Lots of people swear by them. Oh well, not on my truck. If I were to move the mirror up, I would simply glue on a new shoe higher up. Even if you leave the original shoe on there, it's not going to be very noticeable.

    Yes.

I had to replace two windshields in 2 weeks recently. My comprehensive deductible was too high to cover replacement, after I learned the windshields are $438 plus I tint my windshields it adds up. I lowered my deductible to cover the replacement and within a few days the new one cracked (both times were a rock hit).
Safelite sent out a tech that couldn’t repair the crack. The glass ended up splitting. He left my rear veiw mirror hanging from the wires and didn’t reattach it.
Safelite blew off over 4 appointments to change my windshield out after the failed chip repair.

I will no longer be using Safelite and USAA wasn’t helpful in addressing my issues with Safelite. The told me I was SOL if Safelite was treating me bad. No help from them at all.

I really hope you struggle with no such issues. Lol

When they replace the windshield can’t you just have them glue the rearveiw mirror on higher so you don’t have to redo the mod?

There were at least 2 instant failures posted in the original product thread where members windshields cracked. It was chalked up as “improper install” or some such. Taken with a grain of salt.

I was literally just thinking that. I got all the adhesive and glass off the shoe so I'm going to get some Gorilla Epoxy and glue it higher.

I hit a buckle in the highway from the sun in arizona at about 65 mph. Got about 2 feet of air. When I landed my mirror broke out exactly like that. I tried every epoxy I could find. They all lasted about a week and gave up the ghost. The windshield split and I had to get a new one. I bet I spend 60 bucks on all different kinds of epoxy. Save your self the time and just get the windshield.

I'm actually getting the new windshield this morning in an hour. I was able to save the old shoe and got it all cleaned up so after the new windshield is installed I'll try gluing this one higher up.

To everyone knocking the birddog riser, y'all doin' it wrong.

I attached my birddog riser to my windshield with 3M VHB tape in addition to the factory mirror cleat. I regularly have my gopro mounted to the ram ball on the lower and have the "tech package" with the heavy auto dim mirror with backup camera, and even barreling down trails bouncing hard I have never once had an issue with it breaking or falling.

The problem with mirror epoxy is it has a very strong, but brittle bond, you need a flexible bond such as the VHB tape to handle the vibrations. The mirror foot alone isn't enough area to be mounted with VHB but with the bird dog riser there is approximately 6 square inches of surface area. 6 square inches with 20lbs per square inch tape is 120lbs of force I could hang from that bird dog riser.

Plus the riser with VHB has the added benefit of spreading the movement and force of the mirror on the end of the lever around a greater area of the glass further preventing breakage of the windshield.

My windshield has a split from a stone chip right in the middle of the passengers forward view from a damn stone truck, when it gets replaced I will not be installing the rear view cleat and instead will only be using my birddog riser and VHB.

VHB's bond actually becomes stronger due to vibration as well as heat so affixing things to the windscreen is an ideal application, enough surface area warranted.

    @Landnyk

Easy fix, put clear nail polish in the chip to prevent spreading of the breakage, then clean the windshield and mirror riser with isopropyl alcohol, apply 3M VHB/trim tape (available at most auto parts stores but is cheaper via Wal-Mart or Home depot) to the back of the mirror riser. Mark the position before removing the protecive film from the sticky side of the tape with sharpie, remove the tape carefully place your mirror riser to the glass push on it firmly but not hard for a minute, then attach your mirror and foggedaboutet.

If you're REALLY concerned, attach the mirror riser with the tape, let it sit for 24 hours then add the "heavy" mirror.
