You are essentially paying cash if you are paying off your cards every month. You have cash in the bank to cover the purchase.

 

Absolutely agree. We are going on a two week trip to Hawaii and we're taking my wife's sister to help with the kids, all on points. I pay for damn near everything on a card, but we just pay it off each month. The bank hates me but our credit score was 815 last it was run when we got our travel trailer.

 

I like my points and my credit score! Put the big purchased on a credit card then pay it in full every month is the way to go.

 

This is the way you should use a credit card. We save all our vacation money in a separate account and then I pull a bit of cash and put the rest on a credit card when we actually go. Gets paid off when the bill comes and I collect the points on it.

Same for anything with my truck. Don't buy it if you don't have the money, but get the points on the card when you do.

I also paid off my truck about a year ago but that payment still comes out of the account and half goes to long term savings and half split to vacation and new parts/upgrades/maintenance for the taco.

I think you see all these modded trucks on this forum and you don't realize that most are multi year projects, when you spread this stuff across 5 years of group buys and small mods, it adds up....

 

I 2nd this to a T. All 3 of my credit cards offer various 0% deals periodically. I'll payoff higher interest debt(which I have none of at this time), or make large purchases with it, then schedule autopay to pay it off during the 0% period. I call it leveraging my perfect credit. I make a fair amount of $$, which is relative to many factors(Cost of living etc) and have an 11 month old baby and my wife works part-time with her own business. I traded in an albatross of a truck payment(2017 F-150) for my new Tacoma lease strictly to reduce my monthly bills to a more reasonable(to me) amount; in addition I wanted a smaller truck as I have always driven full-size trucks and was getting tired of dealing with the size in downtown/metro areas that I frequent for work.

Regarding spending $$ on mods, I, like alot of others have said am kinda over that phase in my life. I'm a car nut but don't blow cash on cars like I used to. I've done small, inexpensive mods to the Tacoma and will continue to do so while being pretty frugal.

 

I buy everything... EVERYTHING that is remotely able to be bought on a credit card with 1.5% cash back and pay it off every month.

 

I really wish they would let us pay for the mortgage with a credit card ROFL.

I used to pay my rent on my credit card when I was younger until they started charging CC fee... it was the life haha.

 

I miss the good old dollar coin days... Max out card on dollar coins, free delivery straight from the mint. Take directly to bank and deposit. Pay off card. Rinse repeat. /r/churning is leaking!

Yup, and in my case the truck doesn't have a ton of mods. No suspension stuff yet. But I drive it a lot and the plan is to add more serious offroad stuff in 5-10 years depending on how things go. Though I do have a built up Xterra for the fun stuff. It's paid off though and like mentioned took several years to fully build it up. If we can't pay cash for something and we don't absolutely need it, we don't get it.

Shit the only other thing I’m doing until it’s paid off is sliders, and that’s only because I put a sizeable dent in my passenger door that would’ve been negated with them. After it’s paid off and the wife’s is paid off, the real mods will come along. The only things I finance are interest free.
Overall I’m very happy with what it does and how well it does it.

Look for deals on stuff from places that aren't dealers on things that arent brand new. I think I've got a total of $500 in my suspension, and I'm running OME's with almost new 886's up front and extended Fox 2.0s in the rear, with frankenleafs that give me almost 5" of lift in the rear lol. I picked that stuff up from buying peoples' hand-me-downs on the cheap or in exchange for helping them do mods. The Fox's were new from shock surplus, which has great prices on suspension at times.

Got my x20 12k winch from a site that auctions off Amazon returns for $200. It had a bad motor, big deal, smittybilt has a lifetime warranty, they sent me a new one and I replaced it. Sliders, 4xInnovations weld yourself. Cheap. Got my rear bumper used from a forum member. China grille instead of OEM grille. Wheels and Tires off craigslist/friends. Paid full price for the Demello front bumper. Splurged there because I wanted that bumper. Nilights instead of Rigids.

The list goes on. It's all about not just clicking the easiest link to buy something and instead doing some legwork to save the money.
